wouldn't "Dave" have his own insurance policy that would cover him whereas a teenaged licensed driver may not -- if their parent chose the "freebie" route?

This has exceeded my knowledge comfort zone.

And lastly, does it make sense to just go with USAA or shop it with another company? Every time I have shopped my policy with USAA against anyone else, I couldn't find anything less expensive or nearly as good considering the policy limits I have and pricing.

I shopped my USAA policy when it was going to double to add my 16 year old (no car, just the driver). We were already paying almost $200/month for 2 cars/2 drivers, no accidents. We moved to Progressive and it was just over $500 for 6 months paid in full for us, then another $400 when we added a new driver. It renews in February, so I’m hoping it was not a bait and switch price where it skyrockets upon renewal, but I felt like even if it goes up, surely it won’t match what we were paying with USAA.

I will say that USAA uses annual miles driven, while Progressive asks how far away your school/office is, and for us, it’s less than 5 miles, so maybe that makes a big difference.

When I cancelled our policy, USAA didn’t even try to retain my business. My friend said they basically told him that they could no longer be competitive in LA, so they just don’t even work at retention anymore. Definitely worth it to shop it.

Correct.

You can buy a extra vehicle before you have a extra driver and it's cheap. Example... 3 cars and 2 drivers.. you can't drive them all.

Kid then gets license and you shut up about it until something happens in an accident, etc.

If you wait and they ask how many drivers and you say three they automatically put them on the third as a primary and rates are a lot higher.

Now the question is how will the insurance company treat you... each scenario is different.

It's correct. As I understand it. Not saying it's right but it's the prevailing thought amongst plant workers.

First, I research the market, knowing exactly what the insurance is or should be .

Second, I find this insurance locally. I drive to the broker and tell them exactly what I’m willing to pay for this insurance.

Important- do not have an emotional connection to this insurance. Know exactly what you plan to pay for it and not a penny more.

If the broker balks- walk. Very important.

The broker will call you back. Be patient. Their first offer will not be what you asked for. Hang up the phone.

Wait.

When they call back with your original offer, accept.

In theory, you're covered if you "allow" someone to drive your car. But it can't be regularly or if they take possession.
It helps if they are not a household resident. Mine went to boarding school then college so that helps.

Transcripts of grades are required for good student discount. When they hit 26, USAA will take them off your policy when but will write them on their own policy.

Multi Line discount was also a help with home and auto with one insurance company

In my situation, my ex-wife and me share 50/50 custody. My daughter could possibly use the 2nd vehicle that I am buying in my name occasionally, and not primarily, correct without the need for insurance? In other words, "Dad" may let her use the 2nd vehicle to go to school one day, randomly.

Man, it comes down to if you're willing to risk it for the biscuit.

In LA, yes. When I lived in MO, no.

It's two different car insurance worlds.

Great idea if you’re willing to misrepresent and/or commit fraud. While we’re at it let’s go to Best Buy and steal a couple 60” TVs.

There was nothing explicit about our relationship. She's my ex for a reason.

Just added my 16 yr old son with progressive. Was $100 a month with good grades and drivers ed discount. I felt good about it.

We get a national honor society and drivers ed discount for our daughter. But know that it’s not a one time thing when you get this discount. They’ll ask again to make sure your kid is maintaining good grades. We added our daughter back in the summer when she turned 16. Sent in all the proof to get the discount. Now for our 2026 policy they’re asking for updated grade averages. Thankfully she’s still getting straight As.

about USAA
They do reward long time customers. My husband has had USAA since he was in his early 20's. We get some money back from them every spring as they balance out their books. For the past four or five years he also gets a check back for being a long time senior member.

Our bills have gone up as more undocumented and uninsured are on the roads, as repair parts are more expensive and as labor prices have risen.

If you think you might want to stay with one company for the long haul.

I just did this yesterday.

I called my agent and said, "I just bought a new car for my son. We need to add it to our insurance".

She said, "check your email. I just sent you a copy of his proof of insurance."

Crazy thing. I didn't even have to start a thread about it. I did it instinctively.
