But when founder and CEO Tim League learned about a lawsuit that Brandon Vezmar of Austin filed recently against a woman seeking the cost of her ticket because of her texting during their movie date at the Barton Creek Square theater, League said he was conflicted.

“On one hand, I am concerned about our courts being clogged with superfluous lawsuits, but as Vezmar states, ‘this is a threat to civilized society,’” League said in an email Wednesday to the American-Statesman.

He said that if Vezmar would drop the case, Alamo Drafthouse would pay for the movie ticket.

“To save the time of the courts, the Alamo is willing help put this to bed and hereby offers Vezmar a gift certificate in the amount of $17.31 for his next cinema outing,” League said in the email.

Vezmar filed the claim last week after he and a Round Rock woman went on a first date to see a 3D showing of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.”

The 35-year-old woman, reached by phone Tuesday, said she did not know about the claim against her. “Oh my God,” she said. “This is crazy.”
