New Orleans (and the South in general) is hung up on getting married in your early 20s. I just turned 26, and it's literally every other week I see a guy that I graduated high school with is engaged. Getting married before 30 sort of limits yourself. I knew of some married guys who were my age that passed up some career opportunities because they didn't want to leave their wives for extended periods of time. Some of my friends are married/engaged and are practically old men now.

Your friends just suck

I'm 26 (soon to be 27) and married (no kids for a while for sure) and my wife and I party just as hard as all of our single friends. I think the real limiting factor is kids, more so than a wife/husband. I have a super flexible job, so I guess that helps, in that department.

Why would such a time come? Keep going until you're ready for the nursing home.

I mean a time when they can't be young party girls. They can certainly have fun, but when their looks start to go, they won't be met with such eagerness to please them. The world loves the young and pretty. After that goes, things become more difficult.

The straw grasping is just something I've seen a lot. The women I've known partied and traveled until roughly their late 30s. After that, they seem to marry just about anything. The ones who go for much younger guys get it the worst. That arrangement never works out.

In the New Orleans area, I would say about 10-15% would still be good marriage material but the rest are single for a reason. They are beyond the acceptable crazy range.

I think the pendulum swings both ways. While I can appreciate wanting to experience life before settling down and starting a family, there's also something to be said for becoming an empty nester during one's 40s and still having a number of years left to enjoy a life of fun without having to sport a pair of Depends.

you can do both, and just not have kids.

I think people who don't want kids are selfish. Not that not wanting kids is necessarily selfish, but I tend to notice that people that feel that way are selfish people.

If that makes any sense.

Makes sense. Kids distract from what should be the real center of attention - themselves.

I hear it a good bit

what is a non selfish reason for having kids?

Seriously
* Accident
* Want to further your genes - This is more self centered than selfish but still inherently selfish
* Want someone to take care of you when you are old -
* It looks like fun
* You are bored

pretty much reason I can think of is pretty darn selfish.

I think being a parent requires you to be selfless, but the decision is selfish, and likely self centered.

I generally like people without kids. I find them to be more interesting, and culturally aware. Plus they tend to be smarter and better educated.

But I am definitely biased.

BTW - I am kid free and extremely selfish.

Kids are a total pain in the arse. But I selflessly put up with them and raise them so that the rest of humanity can benefit from my offspring.

i actually like kids for the most part, well behaved ones. but i have a short limit.

i watched the LSU game (in nola) on saturday with some negatigers. There was a very poorly behaved kid there.

and i really like that other people breed to support SS until I am old.

What? This is literally our sole reason for existing.

It's our biological imperative.

It's our biological imperative.

that doesn't mean its not selfish or self centered.

And there are a lot of biological imperatives that we shrug off - such as eating as much sugar and salt as you possibly can.

All nature is selfish and self centered when it comes to propagating our genes. Hell, chimps kill the offspring of previous males when they take a new mate.

It's theorized that our penises are shaped the way they are to scoop other Sperm out of the vagina.

You appear to have worked very hard to make yourself feel better about your choice.

Personally, there's times where I'm jealous of my non-parent friends and times when I wouldn't trade my life for anything. I don't see any reason to bring down people on either side of the fence but I do understand why some people feel the need to do it.
