re: Attended Catholic Church for the first time in a while and it wasn't the same

It's more likely that you're a Catholic because your parents were Catholic and they told you that you were a Catholic, also. It's the same for people who were born in the middle east. They're Muslim because they were born to Muslim parents and were brought up being told that they were Muslim, too. The Nicene Creed has nothing to do with it. You want it to tell you what you want to hear because you're more than likely afraid to think for yourself about religion and why everyone else in the world claims that their religion is the "real religion". Ancient People had their little myths and beliefs that died out, the same will eventually happen with Jesus. It's not like Zeus, Osiris, Buddha, or Shiva exist? You know that they're not true. Why would Jesus be any different?

I was thinking the exact thing

Decent troll attempt.
I converted at 29. I’m the only Catholic in my family.

I'm not trolling. I'm 100% sincere.

Also, the "you're catholic because your parents were catholic" thing can be changed to whichever religion you converted from.

Jesus was an actual person

You have a misconception that being a free thinker automatically means you have to be an atheist or agnostic. I spent time as an agnostic and ended up a Catholic. Also, you know Jesus is a historical figure and Zeus is not, right?

Ok, so how much blame do you place at the feet of the parents who allowed this stuff to continue by taking hush money? Because to me, not only are they just as bad as the priests involved, they are in a way much much worse. Yet, nobody wants to talk about that.
I can't imagine being in the shoes of these parents. I am sure there may have been some desire to put it in the past as quickly as possible, and try to move on from it - for the sake of the child. Child probably is sentenced to a lifetime of grief and counseling as it is... do you really want to have to put your child on the stand?
If you got enough money to restart your child's life elsewhere and pay for the emotional therapy, I can see where it might be a tempting offer.
Yes, it prolonged it. But I'm not sure I'm ready to condemn the parents here. I would imagine every single one of them would gladly give back the "hush money" if this never would have happened to their child.

Maybe. All you have to go in stories written in a book decades after he supposedly lived. It's really interesting when you go digging into Jesus as a historical figure.

The overwhelming majority of historians on the subject, including non Christians, agree that Jesus existed...it’s not strictly based on the Bible.

The issue is the Catholic Church has been proven to cover up the rapes, which in turn has led those priests to be able to hurt many more victims than they should have.
I, as do many current leaders in the church, agree 100%. The actions of those priests were both morally and criminally wrong. They and the leaders that covered it up should be punished; but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. We hold priests to a higher standard and I think a lot of people forget that they too are sinners.
I’m not going to blindly forget the issues currently affecting the church, but I’m also not going to treat my local pastor like a pedophile based on the actions of others.

I haven't been to a catholic mass in a while and have been attending orthodox church. I attended mass with my immediate family this Christmas and after hearing all the news on the catholic church recently it just seemed to strange to me. I kept catching myself looking at the Catholic Church in a different light after all these sexual abuse scandals. For instance, when it came time for collections I couldn't help but think I wonder if they will be using this money to pay off their victims of abuse. Obviously they aren't and I know the church has a whole stands for good but it just wasn't the same this time. Anyone else have this feeling recently?
If you have been going to Orthodox Church you realize that the East will probably save Christianity and that the errors of the West both Catholic, Protestant and Secular Humanist will not last and well predate the current scandals.

I had a very similar experience when I attended an orthodox service in North LA a few years ago and when the collection plate came around all I could think of was is the going to be used to pay for the reverend's daughter's G-wagon or his G-5 jet while my arse flies coach. Salvation for sale is wrong in every church.

Denominations are all different interpretations of the same story. It all depends on which you believe, but Christ absolutely intended for us to follow him. I believe we were meant to do so as a community. The Bible was written for the purpose of passing down these stories.

You're sort of right. I wrote orthodox by accident and then once that happened the point I was trying to make kind of became moot so editing became less important to me... good call thought Cajun

Orthodox Sex Abuse at Children Camp Newsweek
Do you have the same feeling in your Orthodox Church, too. As many or more cases of pedophile on a percentage basis in Protestant and other types of churches. They just do a much better job of hiding it and people like you don’t hate them like you hate the Catholic Church.

Implied in your comment is that some church leaders are still trying to sweep it under the rug, which is true. And we absolutely should hold our priests to a higher standard. They may be human, but you can’t stand up in front of the congregation every Sunday and be a moral leader for them if you’re committing grave sins after every Mass. We need to hold our priests to the highest standard. If a man that has devoted his life to God can spend decades committing rape of innocent children, then how can people look up to him or his fellows? How are people supposed to believe in God and follow his teachings, if they can’t trust the men that lead them to be any better than the lowest of low?
