Back in the day, having the new area code meant you were from the burbs or surrounding counties, not the city. There was even a Seinfeld episode about it.

Obviously, they don't mean anything now with cellphones being primary phones.

Yeah...I've seen folks with t-shirts on around here doing the same thing. It's an announcement of being proud to live in the ghetto and still survive.
