Out on a very short limb, but that area is rural as hell. I bet the guy hunts on his property and thought they were poaching his deer.
Obviously not a license to kill anyone, but I honestly can't think of what else could have made him want to shoot them before they even made it to the driveway.
He'll get the death penalty. And we still use the execution chamber here.

Way back in my stupid wild days, I wrecked a vehicle on the country road we lived on. It was around 1:00 AM or so. This was way before cell phones. I walked to the closest house and knocked on the door. Old man opened up the door with a shotgun in my face. Scared the shite out of me. Luckily he was an ask questions first kinda guy. I pointed to my wrecked car and the blood dripping from my hand, and he let me in and use his phone.

That's reasonable. Be suspicious. All this guy had to do was tell them to keep their distance and make the calls for them. Instead he played out whatever Mad Max fantasy was living rent free in his head.

That makes more sense, thanks. I guess I was reading that as gun shot victims, and wasn’t thinking Franklin. But it just says people. So you’re right.
