I spent $1500 about 6 months ago to have my dogs bladder cancer removed.
I bought 1+ years of my dogs life and a more satisfying life for her too.

roughly $200 would be my limit. A big reason I don't have any interest in pets. I love pets. Other people's pets.

A sickly dog is of no need to me. About 3 months ago I put my wife's 12 year old poodle down. The thing had had about 3 seizures and we spent around $1200 on it. One night we noticed spots of blood on the floor, 4 of its teeth had fallen out. We went to the after hours vet and they wanted $2800 to stitch the mouth and pull the rest of her teeth. I asked them to put her down and they said that they wouldn't because they could fix her. The next day I took her to the Oklahoma city Animal shelter and they put her to sleep and disposed of the body for $35.
Saturday I put down a $250 deposit on a Mini Aussie because she's ready for another dog. I tried to talk her into getting a female Dutch Shepherd to go with my male but she said no. Lol

I had to wrap her up burrito style and even that was difficult with the screaming and clawing etc..., but I got it all done. She was permanently off insulin in 16 days and never took it again. I tested her regularly for the next 3 years. She was happy as can be and lived to almost 17.

Take care of him, he's your responsibility. Spend the money as it's not a burden on you financially. Cancer surgeries are the most expensive for pets, but if it would save my buddies life, you're damn straight I would put up the 8+K to keep him around and out of pain. IDGAF what anyone says or thinks about it, because pets mean different things to different people.

This thread is very depressing. I have a 8 year old Catahoula Lab mix, and I am dreading this very day. Its best not to think about it.

I had this decision to make also. Vet gave my dog 4 months to live but wanted me to pay all kinds of stuff for different tests or procedures. I just took my dog home and decided I would simply put her down if she appeared uncomfortable. That was a year ago and my 13 year old dog hadn't been to the vet since and is as spry as ever. The vet was basically trying to rob me. My dog recovered from whatever was bothering her when I changed dog food.
I will not pay for another vet visit the rest of her life outside of when it's time for her to go to that big open field in the sky.

i'll never understand this mentality. i don't care for pitbulls but i don't sit here wanting to kill them or end their life.

If the dog can have a good quality of life you should do what you can. Ours was 11 years old with a cancer tumor in her stomach with almost no possibility of living another year. We made the decision because the treatments were going to be nearly 5K. Had the Vet indicated a strong possibility she would survive and live, we would have paid the money

I just hate them. I don't know why. If I see a cat while I'm driving I try to run over it. I just hate cats. To me they are just another rodent

I assumed when I became a pet owner there might be more costs when they get older, and because of the love my dogs have given me, I pay to take care of them. There is a time to let them pass on, but not because of the cost, but because of the circumstances that are my deciding factor.
