See America as a world player. Not necessarily when we became a super power I believe that happens after world war 1 then we become “the” superpower by ww2. I’m talking at what point did Europe look at America more as a nation and less as European colonies. I know the war of 1812 was fought primarily because Britain still saw America as its land so I’m guessing it had to take place sometime after that in the 1800s. Was it manifest destiny perhaps?

I think that Europe gained a bit of respect for America’s military potential after observing the Civil War.

By the time of the Spanish American War we were viewed as a top tier nation, though not a super power.

. Ehh. Not that I’m trying to nitpick a point, but there isn’t much to this. I know this is a classic middle school US History theme that is repeated in our educational system to simplify things. GB just did what they wanted to and DGAF. They had no realistic expectations of retaking America.

But to your question- that is a tough one to nail down.

I’ll assume your asking “at what point does Europe start looking to America and saying ‘what are y’all going to do?’”

I’d say as early as the Napoleonic wars there was a desire on both sides for America to choose a side. But definitely during the turn of the century America becomes the economic powerhouse. And absolutely during WWI the “most powerful” title transfers from GB to the US.

Interesting topic. Curious how long it will take to devolve.

Another important question, Hawg, is how many unarmed WWII era marines it would take to defeat a chimp? A silverback?

Early 1900’s. By the time of WW1, we were seen as a very important ally, and many efforts were made to draw us into the war.

World War I. But we weren't fully respected and viewed as being needed until World War II broke out.

Would it be fair to say that by world war 1 whichever side America was on was the favorite? Or did we as a nation not have that power until ww2

I’d say WW2 was that point. By the time we got into WW1, it was winding down and I’m still not sure how impactful our presence actually was.

And I don’t think there was a huge question which side we would have been on in Ww1 or WW2.

Well, it was a gradual process and it started before we were even a country. First European countries recognized how rich the Americas are in resources. They knew whoever dominates this region would be among the richest countries in the world.

Then with the American colonies victory in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, Europe got the message that the US can be a potent military opponent. Our war against the Barbary Pirates showed we can project power beyond our shores.

Our rapid and acquisition of territory westward during the 19th century also served notice to Europe of the fact America was now a major world power. Along with our geographic growth came economic growth. From King Cotton in the South, the whaling fleets in Nee England from the early 19th century onward America’s potential was clear to anyone paying attention.

What cemented our position as a not only an economic but also military world power though was first the Civil War in that it showed Europe that not only was America able to created a massive military machine capable of military operations on a continental scale, it was able to crated two (Union & Confederate) such military machines and sustain them for years at a time. This served notice to Europe that America possesses military potential none of them except Britain could hope to match.

The final step in the world seeing America as a major player was our defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American War. This war is what gave America its own respectable colonial empire. This fact, along with the Great White Fleet which showed thr world America was a major naval player capable of projecting substantial naval power across the globe served notice to Europe that America was a force to be reckoned with.

A little while after the civil war probably. I don’t think a lot of people realize it, but we already had the world’s largesf economy years before WW1.

England, Britain, is not European.

The Irish, Scots, Welsh are, however.

This is historic, and has nothing to do with brexit.

After/During the industrial revolution. We were inventing things the world could never imagine at a rapid pace and they had to see that we could use that advantage in military applications. Which we did not too long after

Painting our fleet white and sailing around the world swinging our Johnson for all to see was a good advert for superpower status.

I think during the post-Civil War period there became a realization of America's economic and industrial might. Especially among the landed European nobility who were becoming increasingly cash poor. The robber barons in America were either outright buying these estates or stripping them of their art, furniture, etc.

But I don't think the European political and military classes held America in quite the same regard yet. By the lead-in to WWI, though, I think both sides in Europe knew that America was a game changer.
