Went from 330 to 220 in four months. It was pretty drastic. I didn't realize how quickly he lost the weight, but he says he cut down to a 1000 calories a day and averaged losing a pound a day. I hope he puts some back on.

I agree. Maybe it's a chart for women? I fall into the underweight category in other charts but this one says I can still lose more than ten pounds and be Optimal

this is impossible.

a normal BMR (basal metabolic rate) for a 250ish pound person is around 2000-2500 calorie a day. this is how much you burn..just being alive and walking around. exercise might elevate that by a couple hundred calories, but as you'll see in a minute, that increase in calories is fairly irrelevant.

to LOSE one pound in a day, you have to have a negative intake of 3500 calories.

let me state that again, you have to burn off 3500 calories OVER A PERIOD OF 24 HOURS.

so if he was eating 3000 calories a day and dropped to 1000 calories a day, thats 2000 calories..well less than what it takes to drop a single pound in one day.

not to mention its damn hard for an adult man to live on 1000/calories a day. thats a recipe for rapid weight loss and regain.

yeah, your body chemistry is very messy..you can lose 5lbs in a day with a diuretic or explosive diahrea but in both cases..that aint fat reserves leaving your gut.

anyway, these are facts most people have a hard time..pardon the pun..digesting.

this is why doctors say its more realistic to expect about a pound a week..definitely doable..if you drop from 2500 calories a day to 1500 (and your body was using 2000 before it began to store those extra calories as fat) thats a deficiet of 500/day.

500x7 = 3500 = 1 week = 1 pound gone

eta of course the more weight you lose, the lower your BMR becomes..your body no longer needs 2000/day to remain the same weight..it might need 1800..then 1600...

so this is where you get the diminishing returns unless you are disciplined enough to continue cutting back on your calories.

eventually the food you eat over a 24 hour period will match your BMR and you 'plateau' and to lose any weight past that point, you either need to pump up the exercise or reduce your calories even more..the latter is a losing proposition at a certain point because no one can go around hungry all the time.

His diet? Jillette went vegan. He now eats no animal products, no processed grains, no added sugar or salt. Jillette got what he wanted from his weight loss -- he's healthier, no doubt. But no magic was performed here. Jillette lost weight because he "extreme dieted." When you're 6'7" and 330 pounds (150 kg), it takes a lot of calories to just maintain that weight; at least 3,300 per day at bare minimum and likely 4,000 or more. So 1,000 calories a day represents probably a 3,000 calorie deficit for this man, enough to explain his 0.9 pound per day weight loss.

Keep in mind that just going vegan didn't produce the weight loss, either. He'd have lost weight by eating 1,000 calories of anything. I'm glad he ate healthy foods, but there are some risks when you start out at 330 pounds and drastically cut your intake for months.

First, he not only cut calories, he cut needed nutrients as well. I don't push supplements, but there's no way this guy can get every vitamin and mineral he needs into 1,000 calories a day. I'd have recommended a complete multivitamin/mineral supplement and additional calcium with vitamin D as well (it's not clear if he took supplements).

stupid x 2. this is where you get protein to build muscle and help your body burn more calories

quote:

no processed grains, no added sugar

this is why he lost weight.

or salt

the whole 'we have too much salt in our diet' belief is a myth.

You can get plenty of protein with a vegetarian/vegan diet.

and you can and will eventually develop a soy allergy and have to return to animal products for protein unless you're comfortable living on nuts and seeds the rest of your life.

I get your point, but I hate those charts. It fails to consider anyone with a hint of muscle. If you lift heavy shite that whole chart should be shifted 15 lbs to the right.

BMI is the biggest crop of shite since the food (lobby) pyramid.

BMR is all that counts. a far more important measure if you want to monitor your weight.

I have a friend who is age 55. He is 6-3, 222. Now he's 182. Lost 40 pounds in 3 months and did it on his own. He picked the healthy foods he liked and kept his intake down just above critical levels. Started working out, too, when he lost 25 because he realized he could run and do other workouts he never thought he'd ever do again in his life. Life is a little different for anyone when you're not carrying around a couple of boat anchors (25 pounds)! He kept working out and eating right and lost the 40. It's been 8 months now and he says he has upped his intake to just stay around the same weight and enjoys eating pretty much anything he wants, but not too much now. Says he feels 20 years or more younger. He doesn't look like you say. Just because some washed up actor looks one way, you say people shouldn't lose weight when they get a little older and you want to know the cutoff age?

Sounds to me you want an excuse to stay fat.

Maybe that looks odd to you because you're so accustomed to seeing fat middle-aged men.

Based on that link, if you're not fat to begin with, you won't have the loose skin problem.
