I think I was 7 or 8 and back then the blades kept going until you turned the mower off.

10 years old - 1/2 acre yard with Yazoo.No weed eaters in those days,had hand clippers.
When I got 11 I started mowing yard down the street every week,next door neighbor hired me occasionally.

Your mom did you a favor to be waking you up at 9 in the morning, especially in the summer. I know I don't want to cut grass after noon when it hits the upper 90's with stupid humidity to go with it.

After cutting in the heat on day, I started to think the lights on it weren't to turn on if it got dark before you finished, they were to turn on before you STARTED.

As soon as I could push the mower. And I mean push we did not have self propelled. I had to push the lower cross bar in the handle. I would guess about 7 or 8

Dad taught me one summer and then he went back to it full time. He was too anal about the yard. I did land a sweet gig cutting the neighbors yard that lasted throughout high school.

As soon as I could physically push it, probably around 9 or 10. I had to have my dad start it because I wasn’t strong enough to pull the draw cord though.

I grew up in the Midwest so the other rite of passage was shoveling snow. Started doing that about 5 or 6. It was my job solo without my dad at about 11 or so.
My first visit home from college. Brand new snowblower in the garage. Pops wasn’t going back to shoveling after his human snowblower moved away.

My dad hired a yard guy when I moved out of the house. He probably hadn't cut grass in over a decade by then

When I came back home the garden tractor had a nice new hydraulic plow.
Shoveling the driveway was an hour job.

Hell, you had a riding mower??? Then that's so much easier than walking behind a power mower, or better yet, you supplying the power to one of those old reel mowers we had.
I used to cut grass from age 8 until my teens with a reel mower before one of my uncles gave me his old power mower.

Probably 8 or 9. Parents yard was 100’ x 100’ +/-. Push mower only, never had a rider growing up. Mom had plenty flower beds and had to trim around those and the side walk out front with a cane knife. Learned to sharpen a cane knife at an early age.

I don't know....but I was young enough that dad had to tie a brick to the seat to keep it running because I wasn't heavy enough.

I’m already teaching my 4 year old. I let him do it (supervised of course) and he loves it. At that age they think it’s cool so it’s easy to get them to do it. By the time he’s 5 or 6 he’ll be doing it in his own hopefully.

Exactly! Then, being so young hitting the cord and the ensuing shock was always a plus.
