You'd think we'd have solved the problem of 2 trains at same point/time on same track by now. How is this still a problem?

I do not understand how trains crashing into each other are even possible now unless it's intentional

I was just about to say this. Seems like with today's technology there should be multiple redundant safety and monitoring measures.

Scary stuff. Was just on this train about ten days ago. They're saying it's likely over 40 dead.

Me too. It could have been us. j/k

I was in the NJ / NYC area. Rode the train to and from NJ to Penn Station. Also rode the Manhattan subway C train.

There were a couple of times when a train on the next track passed us going the opposite direction, and it freaked me the frick out. And I've ridden plenty of trains in the past.

A couple of years ago I took the high speed train from Rome to Naples and back. We hit 300 KPH (180 MPH) at times along the way.

I can see Gavin Newsom spinning this. See, we just stole the taxpayer's money and have yet to lay actual tracks. We saved lives by doing nothing.

Lots of people are dead. Let's immediately politicize this tragedy that is unrelated to American politics.

Well they are going 150+ mph toward each other.

But I’m fairly certain in most of France they actually have 2 completely different lines. So it’s virtually impossible.

I would think the real question here isn’t why isn’t there a better warning system, but why is it even possible?

Sounds like one was stalled on the rail and the other rear ended it

These trains weren't headed toward each other. They were both going the same direction, but one was stopped on the tracks for some reason.

Sounds like this might be a PTC issue. The stopped train failing to advance through the next signal block should've triggered a stop signal for the train behind it. If the engineer for the second train failed to see that signal, the emergency brakes should've kicked in.

I don't see how this happens. It seems as though the rail system program would limit access to restrict a segment of the railway if another train was within a defined distance.

Been wanting to do that. Where you going for it ? I’ve been hearing Berlin and Prague are great spots for the Christmas markets.

The smaller villages have some of the best Christmas markets. Wernigerode, Celle and Goslar near me all have good ones.

My cursory understanding of high school Physics leads me to believe that this is far more preferable than two trains colliding head on at full speed.

For the latter, look up the Nashville train collision that happened 100 years ago. I believe it is the deadliest rail accident in US history.
