At least 10 passengers have died and multiple have been injured after two high-speed trains collided in Spain, prompting the suspension of the line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region, rail operator Adif said on Wednesday.
Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the Castilla La Mancha region, said authorities can confirm 10 deaths, but that 'that number will surely rise,' adding that 'the situation is going to worsen.'
But the figure is feared to be far higher, and regional emergency response coordinators are understood to be saying there are over 40 deaths.

One well-placed government source admitted to Spanish press: 'It could be worse than Adamuz.' A rail crash in Adamuz in southern Spain left 46 dead earlier this year.
El Mundo reports that while the circumstances of the accident are still unclear, sources have indicated that a train from private rail company Iryo was traveling from Madrid to Seville.

I can see Gavin Newsom spinning this. See, we just stole the taxpayer's money and have yet to lay actual tracks. We saved lives by doing nothing.

Scary stuff. Was just on this train about ten days ago. They're saying it's likely over 40 dead.

We were in May and we rode a lot of trains in Spain. We've been traveling lots of European countries the last 8 months and this certainly give you something to think about. Going to be doing the Christmas markets in December with lots of train rides.

Only because it’s jarringly outside of the norm, which is kind of the point. Roughly 1,750 people die in traffic accidents every year… in Spain alone. They obviously need to unfrick whatever caused this, but the reality is that you’re far safer on a high speed train in any first world country than you are in a car on the roads of said countries.

Been wanting to do that. Where you going for it ? I’ve been hearing Berlin and Prague are great spots for the Christmas markets.

Colmar is an awesome town to do Christmas markets, especially if you aren't a large city fan. Within walking distance of where the Christmas market is there's several Michelin star restaurants if that's your things. Make your reservations now though as they are packed between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Same here. We went a few years ago and loved it. Going to start in Prague and work our way around eastern europe again.

I've always been curious how true this really is.
40 million trips by car per day vs 1.7 million trips by train.
1750 annual deaths in car accidents vs 18-50 deaths in train accidents.
1 annual death per 22.2k daily trips by car. 1 annual death per 34-94.4k daily trips by train.
So trains in Spain are less deadly, but not by a huge amount.
Of course, you wonder if an idiot in a car getting blasted by a train counts against both.

This is the second big one in a few months. But yes, it's safer than the roads, I agree.
