AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine’s Benefits Outweigh Risks, Says EU

Wall Street Journal

The European Medicines Agency so far sees no indication that the vaccine caused a small number of blood-clotting incidents reported across the region, Executive Director Emer Cooke said in a briefing Tuesday.

The regulator is currently reviewing those incidents to determine whether they represent a broader risk. Ms. Cooke said the results of the review would be presented Thursday.

The vaccine, which was developed jointly with the University of Oxford, hasn’t been approved in the U.S. AstraZeneca is expected to apply for authorization for emergency use once it submits results from Phase 3 human trials conducted in the U.S. Those trials are due as early as this month.

Tuesday’s briefing followed moves by a number of European countries, including Germany, Italy, France and Spain, to halt use of the vaccine pending an examination of blood clotting in a small number of people who received it, which in a few cases has reportedly led to deaths. Officials in those countries said they were awaiting a full review of those cases, which regulators say have been less prevalent than expected rates of severe clotting in the general population.

Ms. Cooke said that blood-clot incidents remain very rare.

“Trust in the safety and efficacy of the vaccines…is paramount for us,” Ms. Cooke said. “We are worried there may be an effect on the trust of the vaccines.”

Looks like the blood clot issues reported were still extremely rare.

Not that it matters to you since Astra Zeneca isn't likely distributed where you live anyways. The Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J are looking great.

If there is enough of the other vaccines to go around I understand not taking the minimal risk of the blood clots.

Unfortunately for Europe; they've completely screwed up the rollout of all of these Covid related vaccines.

The fact that the Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J vaccines were developed so quickly and appear to be superior to the AstraZeneca alternative should be a point of pride in America's health system (Germany's to). China also had a 3-4 month head start and they still don't have anything viable despite not being anywhere near as safety conscious as western drug makers.

I'm scheduled for Pfizer. I heard about some soreness and exhaustion after the first and second dose. Worth it IMO.

I feel like shite when I get the flu vaccine for a day or so anyways.

The Liberal media in Europe is simply lying and spreading false propaganda because its a British vaccine. Which is funny to see the American Patriots lap up the liberal europe media message

I'm just glad that everyone is so certain that a new type of vaccine that modifies your body's basic code doesn't have any long-term negative effects.

Healthy people who dont drive the first model year of a car or buy the first model of a phone are not going to take a rushed out vaccine where "the benefits outweigh the risks."

Continental Europe is going to have another lost summer, while everyone in the US and UK will be partying.
