You don't need to deflect it. Just slow it slightly so it hits a country not named America.

We need to be spending much more than we currently are to detect these things. An asteroid impact could potentially be an apocalyptic event and yet receives very little focus. The amount spent on the ISS would have easily set up a real detection system as well as a way to counter the threat.

Why? If an asteroid strikes earth, its going to suck, and I dont want to know about it for 3 days in advance.

I would rather not know and it just hit than know for weeks and the entire world go batshit crazy
Could you imagine the amount of Heineken and flat screen looted in 3 weeks of total anarchy?

No, but you would want to know about it 3 years in advance. That's more than enough time for humanity to take steps to...not die.

To properly prepare for an inevitable event. This seems like it should be both a no-brainer in terms of the necessity and much much higher up on the scale of priorities than a lot of what we blow money on.

Related question. The Chelyabinsk bolide supposedly exploded with the force of a 200 kiloton nuke. Why did this explosion not have the same effect as an airburst EMP nuke?
It didn't have an EMP effect because it wasn't nuclear. Duh.

As for the force of the blast itself, it wasn't felt as much on the ground because it exploded over 20 times higher than a typical airburst nuke.

I'm extremely ignorant, but how do you realistically counter them?
Depends on how early we notice it, I guess. You have to imagine the vast distances we're dealing with, and realize that it only takes a slight nudge to change the trajectory enough to miss Earth. A speck of dust could divert an asteroid enough if it happens long enough before impact.

Eh, I don't know. I'd like the chance to enjoy my final days unrestrained enjoying some time with family and friends. I'd rather go out fricking after a long day of spending time with family than sitting in my office alternating between TD and AutoCAD.

So three times the size as one that broke some windows...ah shite where my guns and bug out bag
It didn't just "break some windows". It broke enough windows in several different cities to injure over 1000 people seriously enough to seek medical treatment. If one three times the size comes in at the same angle, it would do some serious damage.

But the Chelyabinsk meteor was just a glancing blow. If it had come in more directly, you probably wouldn't be joking about broken windows.

With the morons we have in society now, some a-hole would probably shoot you on the way to your families house.

If we could guarantee that everyone would be civil then maybe some heads up... but we go full retard on the roadways trying to make taco tuesday on time. My guess is that total chaos for 3 days would be miserable

Although that’s still a safe distance, a fact that stands out is that asteroid 2017 OO1 is about three times as big as the house-sized asteroid that penetrated the skies over Chelyabinsk, Russia in February, 2013, breaking windows in six Russian cities and causing more that 1,000 people to seek treatment for injuries, mostly from flying glass

so even if this thing had hit, it would have done some serious damage to the immediate area but that's about it?

One entered the atmosphere, one did not.

That's if the low end size estimate is correct. If it's closer to the high end estimate, we're talking about complete destruction of everything in a 5-10 mile radius.

Meh, I have access to a helicopter that could be used to transport me to where we would congregate to be away from the chaos and tune it out.

I would pity "civilized" America if this happened though. As you said someone attempting to get their takeout 90 seconds faster will run you off the road. I wouldn't want to see what would occur if they had zero regard for even their own life in a situation like is what is being hypothesized.
