We need to be spending much more than we currently are to detect these things.

quote:Well, even Niels Bohr learned something new every day. I can't pretend to know all about it, but after a little quick research, I believe a meteoric EMP is different than a nuclear EMP. A nuke blasts gamma rays which interact with the atmosphere and create the EMP effect, whereas a meteor actually disturbs earth's magnetosphere to produce the effect.
but according to wiki, meteor strikes are listed as one source of naturally occurring emp.
Can anyone more knowledgeable clarify or correct me if I'm wrong? I hope I don't have to duh myself a second time.

so even if this thing had hit, it would have done some serious damage to the immediate area but that's about it?
Lots of variables. This wouldn't be an extinction level event, but it would have been a damned big explosion. Depends on velocity, mass (is it solid metal?), the angle of entry, how it holds up in the atmosphere, etc.
The one that killed the dinosaurs is estimated to be 10 to 15 km in diameter: Chicxulub crater

What exactly would we do if it were to impact earth??
Um.... we would die either in the initial blast or in the resulting fallout, and if one did survive, well welcome to the dark ages again it we are talking a large asteriod
