You are in your early 40's and are contacted by a half sibling you had no idea existed. Is that good or not?

Your thoughts?

I guess it would depend if the half sibling is trashy or not. A half sibling that wants to find out about their family, sure. A half sibling looking for money to buy meth? Nah.

I’d be curious but cautious. You don’t need them in your life but if they are good people it’s not so bad. If they are crazy I’d just say nice to meet you and that’s it.

Eh, my dad was in his 50s when he found out he had a half brother just a couple months younger than he was.

Been looking for his dad (my grandpa) for years. Was suspicious at first but turns out he wasn’t looking for money. Just wanted to know his family. It’s actually pretty cool.

Now if he just wanted money then it wouldn’t have been as nice.

If it’s a hot chick I wouldn’t mind. I’m freaky like that.

I have a friend whose Swiss parents could not afford a baby and put him up for adoption as an infant.

He was adopted by a Dutch couple and had a good life growing up. However, he decided that he wanted to know who his birth parents are and went searching for them. He hit pay dirt and learned that his birth parents eventually married each other and had other children.

He connected with his biological family and things went well. They all wanted to know each other and got to become acquainted.

I was happy that my friend's story had a happy ending. For some others it does not turn out so well.

Actually, they are unaware of the relationship. There is no money or anything needed. The friend is adopted and found their birth family. The dilemma is to contact or not.

I was adopted and took a DNA test last year for the health related reports. To my amazement, I was matched with close relatives on both the maternal and paternal sides. I won’t bore you with the details, but deciding whether to contact these new relatives wasn’t easy with regard to my curiosity versus their right to privacy. Best of luck to your friend.

I can't imagine not wanting to know someone who is the child of one of my parents.

Could be a good thing. Could connect with someone pretty cool. Or it could be someone looking for money. Either way, it’s worth it to find out.

What if the person does not know that they are the product of an affair by your dad and their mom, and they have been lead to believe all along that the man/dad who raised them is their dad?

Should these half-siblings remain anonymous to each other?
