A major problem for the high schools is that they are on block schedules, which means the kids fall courses are fricked. It doesn’t help at all making up minutes in the spring semester or adding days in spring semester or taking away holidays in the spring semester. The fall courses are totally fricked.

Several schools still do not have power. They couldn’t plan the turnaround to send these kids somewhere else and where to send them that fast.

I've been saying that for the past several days. I was told here that the plan was to send kids to other schools and they'd use t-buildings for the time-being. Are you saying that wasn't the case? If not, the superintendent never should've announced a return date.

Power came back on around 1:00 pm today at Lake Martin.

Things must be considerably worse than the timelines and estimates he was given when he gave confidence in Wednesday. Do you know how long it took us being displaced and teaching two classes per room or in cafeterias, etc before we got T buildings after the flood? 6 months. These schools with power are already packed, plus Covid protocols. At least it’s a day by day assessment? Other parishes called the whole week early.

From what I was told, teachers/staff are not allowed to bring their personal kids to school today or tomorrow for Covid reasons...yet one of the plans upon kids returning is to combine classes due to the expected teacher shortage

I know I’d be willing to teach in a larger room like the library to cover my partner teacher who lost her home if I have to.

The Covid protocols definitely contradict each other all the time. I know my coworkers without childcare can work from home tomorrow without using their time.

There is an entire Facebook thread of like 800 comments of people bitching about this and sharing e-mail addressed of people on the school board. Also teachers jumping in and complaining about actually having to go to work, it is sad really. While some complaints are justified 90% seem self entitled and ignorant. Such as people batching about what an inconvenience it is for them. Teachers and adults in general are soft nowadays and that post just proves it.

That post is pathetic. Some have legitimate things going on, like trees through their roofs. Some just like to complain about anything. We only had a few teachers not return today, and they had lost their homes or had no childcare due to daycare closures. The rest of us were there contacting families and ready to teach tomorrow if we were told to.

I was bored snd read through every comment, teachers complaining about going in while they have no power at home. Well wtf are you going to do at home if you have no power, you can work. Parents complaining that they don't have power, so why not send your kids to school with AC and hot meals.

The legitimate concerns were transportation if their child needed to go to another school. If they evacuated switching to BLP but I was told they could do BLP short term until they return instead of the normal 9 week requirement.

Precisely my point. He's always in such a rush instead of taking time and establishing an effective gameplan. Use this week to get things organized and a gameplan developed, then come back fresh on Monday.

As I stated before they had an effective game plan, part of the problem from a school board member I'm friends with is that Entergy/Demco told them Monday and now the damage is more extensive than they believed. They were going to put students into other schools but enough parents botched he decided to change that. They will probably wait to go back till Monday and then we will teachers and parents complain because the school year will be extended past Memorial Day.

They shouldn't have to extend the school year if it's a federally-declared disaster.

How long can they be off of school?

There is extra time built into the school year for things like weather-related closures. There’s enough “banked” days to not alter the school year if we miss through Friday. But that’s the limit according to my principal.

There are also ways to add a few minutes of instructional time to each day for the remainder of the year to avoid having to extend the year. Dismissing at 2:30 instead of 2:27, just for example

If their “game plan” was the move t-buildings to other schools as you posted previously, then that’s not a very good game plan. Those buildings take a lot of time to move, not to mention they have to be set up for technology and then all the desks & supplies brought in.

What happens with the next storm? Isn't it ~180 days have to be attended? Why use all of your "banked" days before 2 weeks of school have been completed?
