CCC? I thought that was a good program.

i wonder if the quality of the military would go up or down if everyone was required to do 2 years. You'd get a lot of duds, but also a lot of the best and brightest who wouldnt otherwise consider it.
bad idea...unless we are in a war for our lives I want the best and the brightest doing what they do now.

I wouldn't be opposed to a one or two year mandatory military service or government service program. Work them hard for a year or two.
Oddly enough (and you may not be among them), but usually the folks saying this are so-called 'small government' conservatives.
What the frick is small or limited about a government that can legally kidnap you to do its bidding? That's some pinko shite if I've ever heard it.

My husband and I just had this same conversation this past weekend. Both of us wish we would have when we were younger. I could have gotten my education for nursing totally paid for by Navy or AirForce(likely would have become Navy nurse though).
Or I could have done what a former coworker of mine just did and join Navy Nursing Reserves. She still works full time and goes once a month to the hospital on the navy base in San Diego. She is like 24 too so perfect age to do that.
Although...I think technically I still have until my early 40s to join as a navy nurse(reserves). If we end up not having a kid anytime soon...may be something to seriously think about.

If so, what are the prospects for a 31 year old entering the military? I'm curious.
Sling hash state side.

The only branch I would have any interest in joining is the Marine Corp, but I would probably make a pretty shitty marine so I never seriously considered it.

I've been on military bases from all the branches. Trust me, if given the option of which branch you want to serve in as a nurse, go Air Force. And I say that as a guy who served 10 years in the Reg Army & Army Guard. Air Force lives better than the rest, period.

This was me. I messed around too much in college. Huge debt now.

I've actually been thinking about it for years. I have always felt like it would be something I would regret if I didn't do it.
You sound just like me, JAG and all. I remember in law school not wanting to go JAG because all my buddies were infantry officers and it didn't seem like service enough. Ended up not doing anything, so...
FWIW, most my friends laughed at those of us who were interested in military after college, not because we couldn't do it, but because they thought we were certifiable. I had a drunk LtCol tell me I would be an idiot for trying, and to go make money, use it to buy a grunt a drink every now and then and to use my career to try and unfrick our society in some other way. Doesn't take away all the regret for not serving, but it made sense to me.

I thought the Army abandon this program recently.
One of the guys I flew with, his son went in last year on that program, flying in Germany now, believer it or not at the same base his father and I flew out of.
Here is the deal, the military changes desires and you never know, out here in the civilian world when those things change. So if may be off now but if a war is coming, it will be back would be my bet, if they have cancelled it.
But it goes back an forth and you can study for the aviation test. I had never been off the ground higher than I could jump my first day of flight school.
Even if they have changed it from High School diploma, doesn't mean they require a full degree. Worth talking to the recruiter.
Here is how to handle any enlistment and get what you want. Sign nothing till you take all your tests and physicals and the recruiter shows you a set of orders for the school or schools you want with your name on them, then sign. You'll probably go in on a delayed enlistment, up to 6 months to get you setup for the schools.
You'll never get screwed that way.

I would renounce US citizenship before being forced to enter a military engagement against my will, regardless of circumstance.
It's really not even a question for me; such a mandate is an abhorrent infringement upon my pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If I could do it over again, I'd go into the Air Force as a pilot.
I love that he assumes he'd walk right in to fricking Top Gun.
Every military pilot I have known pretty much walked in and said they wanted to be a pilot, and Top Gun is a Navy program so he probably is not concerned with that. It is not uncommon for someone to enlist earn a college degree while serving then go to OCS, and pilot training. I think it was in 2011 that 4 of the pilots on the Navy Blue Angels team had started their career by enlisting right after high school and earning their degrees after that. The Navy also has a prep program for enlistees that might want a shot at going to the Naval Academy.
