I'd say probably not, since their jobs can be done at this point by anyone with a captains license, gps and a radar.

It's not a state law. The boats are located on a federal waterway and subject to federal government regulations. The captain is responsible for all the safety issues and oversight of the boat, which there are many.

I know a few in LA. It's hard work, no doubt. I'm sure they deserve every penny they earn.
But my problem is how it's artificially limited. Anyone who meets the license and experience requirements should be allowed to pilot the boats.

The casino boats are required to have licensed captains on board bc the U.S. Coast Guard requires that they do. They are still responsible for all the paperwork and safety regulations as if the boat still set sail. These jobs are not paying pilot wages and come no where close to those $$ figures.

This is my only problem with the pilots. The nepotism is amazing. I know some great pilots who deserve it and I know a couple that I wouldn't trust to walk my dog. However, they get their position because of their family, it doesn't go to the best candidate. Getting an apprenticeship is one thing, being voted to become an actual pilot is where the nepotism really occurs. They are technically government employees, even though they generate their own revenue which is a good thing. At some point the gravy train will be over and the best candidates will win.

Yep, thats how it is for the Treasure Chest in Kenner too. I use to work there and they said the only time it was ever even thought of to move the boat was during a hurricane but even that hasnt been done in years. The "pilot" makes 6 figures also, he was a real cool guy too. He would always be walking around talking to the employees at least when I worked there years ago. IDK who it is now.
