quote:

Debbie Stevens was out delivering newspapers in Fort Smith, Arkansas when floodwaters in the riverfront town swept up her car. A distraught Stevens called 911 for help.

Instead of receiving help, she was mocked by the 911 operator, who told a panicked Stevens "You're not going to die. I don't know why you're freaking out" as water slowly filled her car. Stevens later drowned.

quote:

Police released audio of the disturbing 911 call Friday but not the name of the dispatcher. Stevens can be heard pleading for help, repeatedly saying, "Please help me. I don't wanna die."

The 911 dispatcher replied to Stevens in a mocking tone, flippantly telling her authorities will get there when they get there.

Dispatcher: "You're not going to die. I don't know why you're freaking out. It's OK. I know the water level is high."
Stevens: "I'm scared. I'm sorry."
Dispatcher: "I understand that, but you freaking out — doing nothing but losing your oxygen up in there, so calm down."
Stevens: "When are they going to be here?"
Dispatcher: "As soon as they get there."

At one point the 911 operator berates Stevens for driving into the water. Stevens: "I'm scared. I've never had anything like this happen to me before."
Dispatcher: "This will teach you next time don't drive in the water."
Stevens: "Couldn't see it, ma'am. I'm sorry, or I wouldn't have."
Dispatcher: "I don't see how you didn't see it. You had to go right over it, so."

The full audio of the 911 call and police bodycam footage can be viewed in the video below, but a warning to readers, some might find it disturbing.

I read the article first and my opinion changed after listening to the call.

After you listen to the audio, do you think the operator is mocking her? Is this a poorly titled article?

Here is a photo of the woman who drowned and the 911 dispatcher.

911 dispatcher on the right.

From reading it, the only part I disagree with is her telling her that will teach her a lesson.

Sounds like she is trying to calm her down

Nice example of Darwinism. Probably unnecessary, but its impossible not to see water high enough that will flood your car

I mean unless she was near where a levee broke and water rushed at her all at once, it’s absolutely impossible not see water that will flood your car

That's what I got out of it.

I think the 911 operator was somewhat misled based on the way the woman sounded when she first started explaining the situation. She didn't sound like it was urgent, but then I think the water started getting into her care faster than she first realized. No one is at fault, but I don't think the operator was mocking her.

How I pictured the operator to look like:

Yeah she was being realistic.

Stay calm, wait for help. Panicking g wont help the situation.
Shame the woman drowned.

If someone doesn't know an area they are in, the road might dip down, but can't be seen because of the water.

The underpass on Acadian is a perfect example. If someone familiar with the area tries to go through it then it would just be stupid, but if you never drove that area before and you see the water, you would have no idea there is a dip in the road.

She probably should have gotten out of her car and tried to swim for safety

I wonder if she even tried or if the door was stuck or something because it seems like instinct would kick in at that point.

Instead of just staying in the car as it fills up with water. Maybe she couldn't swim, but even not being able to swim you have a better chance of survival than just sitting in the car.

Didn’t listen to the audio you provided. But if it’s the one that they edited, you need to hear the full length one. Earlier today they posted the full audio that you could hear her yelling when the water got over her head. The news stations caught a lot of flack for actually having the audio of her dying.

One was white. Did you assume she was black because she couldn't swim? That's racist.
