Try Phoenix area or Austin. Both are great outdoorsy cities.

At this point, I would 100% accept any even remotely similar level job offers in either of those cities. I’m a musician who loves brisket, so Austin is definitely a top city for me, and I have some good friends in Phoenix, so I’d have a decent support system in no time. I regret turning down a job up in northern arizona years ago. It was a huge mistake which I regretted immediately and every day since, probably one of the top 3 biggest regrets of my life.

I grew up in Bossier city, left the week after graduation for the army and just returned last year (with the Air Force now) stationed at Barksdale.

I have a unique perspective and I love Louisiana, but it’s in a death spiral. There are simply no jobs, no industry, no hope anywhere around north louisiana. It’s sad to see. It wasn’t great growing up, but it wasn’t this bad. Everywhere you look in Bossier and Shreveport there are abandoned, dilapidated buildings, vacant malls, vacant grocery stores. There are one or two actual restaurants, nothing but fast food otherwise.

My wife and I are Texas residents and the comparison is breath-taking everytime we go back to San Antonio, which is thriving. We are counting the days to get the hell out of here with our next PCS. My family lives here, I love the people and the culture, but those are memories more than anything else. No way I want my kids growing up here.

The state is dying slow & LA "lifers" are too stubborn to admit it. They're just satisfied to go down with the ship.

People will lean on all the talk about food & family being here so they stay. Guess what? There's loads of healthier food, and family for that matter, in 47 other states (take out MS & AL for the obvious reasons). Your niece or nephew won't car or remember who was at their 5th birthday party or their 18th. Send a card, send a text, or video call & be done with it.

There's also FAR less trash, better roads, & wasteful state government spending to deal with in at least 30 states.
You can always come back to visit the family that is too dumb to leave. But, once you start doing that-those trips will decrease in frequency because each time you do return you'll be smacked in the face with all the reasons you left in the first place. Many posters have already mentioned this over a dozen times.

Your overall quality of life will increase by a factor of 5 the moment you cross the state line. You can hunt, fish, camp, hike, etc. anywhere. And the scenery, smell, & weather (particularly the heat) will be far better. Quit hanging on to crap that DOES NOT MATTER as to why you stay in LA. We were not created to waste away in a mosquito infested near year round summer wasteland.

Yes, my family is gone within 5 years. Moving to the mountains in Park City or surrounding area.

I want my kids to grow up some more in Louisiana and enjoy time with grandparents, but we want to move by the time they start junior high.

What countries aren’t dying or still basically third world in terms of plumbing, sanitation, safety, and healthcare?

Where would you go?

I came close to landing a job in Thailand a couple years back.

Well, when one has kids, having grandparents and aunts and uncles nearby is a huge advantage as they will often provide free babysitting. Also makes holidays way less stressful. As a kid, growing up surrounded by cousins basically gives you a fool proof friend group in school that you can always fall back on. Good family will always have your back in a fight, and you’ll always have kids to play with outside. These are not underrated qualities for a childhood. I grew up where literally all my neighbors were cousins, aunts, and uncles. It was a pretty damn good childhood, if I don’t say so myself.

As for food, who cares if it’s healthy, it tastes good

The main issue I hear from a lot of LA ex-pats is it’s difficult to get the ingredients to cook their favorite dishes outside of the gulf south. A lot of things that locals take for granted are a lot harder to find. Sausages and seasoning blends have to be shipped in at high markups or smuggled in luggage on trips to visit family. It’s nice to be able to get the staple dishes you grew up on whenever you want because there really aren’t that many places to get a good gumbo, jambalaya, stuffed crab, crawfish pie, catfish almandine, frog legs, etouffee, etc outside of south Louisiana unless you’re cooking it yourself. While it’s not an end-all-be-all deal breaker, it’s a big perk for living here.

I’m eventually going to leave. Currently have a great job and all my family is here. To the degree that those factors change, the probability of me heading to TX is going to increase

Left after Katrina and sometimes miss somethings but lots I don’t miss. We read the poli board out loud sometimes to remind why we don’t live in the Deep South.

What about before you have kids or after they are grown? Do the property taxes not exist then?

Wish I would’ve left 15 years ago. I’ll have to wait another 10 before I can. And it can’t come soon enough

Northern AZ is fantastic. I love making the occasional sojourn to Flagstaff and Williams. Eventually, I'll find my away down to Prescott and Sedona.
