I'm making the assumption that you are wondering how someone could survive on an income of $56,335.
You would have to have some kind of drug or gambling addiction, or no accounting skills whatsoever.
I've lived off of $13,000 a year before. It's not that hard if you know what you're doing.
ETA: My income is variable year-to-year, and is usually a few grand short of the stated figure. My assets (and lack of debt) push me over in terms of net worth.

I'm surprised so many balling OTers do not know the difference between net worth and income...

Along with about 98% of Louisiana.

School debt is probably helping pull this down a good bit, among other things

Well. Homeowners for one. Who doesn't have at least that into their house. There are houses everywhere....so the AVERAGE I thought would be higher.

Fully 9.1 million U.S. residential properties were seriously underwater, representing 17% of all properties with a mortgage in the first quarter, according to RealtyTrac’s U.S. Home Equity & Underwater Report for the first quarter of 2014.
To be seriously underwater, the combined loan amount secured by the property is at least 25% higher than the property’s market value.

I'm guessing the millions of Americans who are upside down on their mortgage.

You only have to pull in 6 figures to be in the 1%.

Most people don't have their houses paid off.

Off the top of my head, I'd say my net worth is right around that number. Haven't really looked at a few things in a while. It's steadily increasing with each paycheck though. Most is in savings and retirement. I don't own a whole lot of stuff or any property. No need for that at the moment as an unmarried 30 year old living in a larger, cheap city.

Ah ok. People chasing the American dream.
Hard to believe it's that significant.
