Simple question. Fair debate.

This isn't meant to be a knock on America but for the life of me, I can't imagine why you would be "proud" of the place you were born.

I derive pride from my accomplishments be they personal or be they related to helping others.

The luck of my birth does not cause me to feel "pride".

Now, if I'd been alive during WW2, I suppose I would've been proud of what America DID. But, that's another discussion.

I used to be but the last six years seeing what our government has become, I can't say that I am a proud American anymore. We don't stand for anything anymore.

I'm damn proud of our military and thank each and every one of them for their service to this once great nation.

100% yes, it is easily the greatest country in the world. Well...as long as you live in cities with the right demographics.

i'm neither proud nor ashamed of anything outside of my control.

eta: that being said, there is no other place i'd rather live.

I get that, but wouldn't some of the inherit values that led to your success come from the place of your upbringing? Where you are from influenced you (probably whether you know it or not) to live the life that led to your accomplishments

We are headed in a direction where the lowest of society will be about the same as the middle financially but as long as you are in the top 10% you will be fine.

That's why if you ask me "Am I proud that America did X,Y or Z", then I can give a reasonable answer.

But just proud to be an American by some sort of default?(Or any country really). That just seems odd to me.

And, even then, my "pride" would have to be directly connected to something I can feel connected to.

To me, to do otherwise would be like graduating with a 1.8 GPA and someone saying, "hey, are you proud that your class had a better than 3.0 average"?

I can't be proud of something I had nothing to do with, but I damn sure am glad I was born here.
