re: Are you a workaholic?

My perspective is that everyone should view themselves as the hardest working person at their place of work. If you can't say that then your employer should replace you. If you're the owner and don't view yourself as the hardest worker then some other owner is doing it better....unless you're content with your level of success. In that case

I always work more than 40 hours in a week, and I am always checking and responding to e-mails. I don't like the term workaholic. Nothing in me drives me to work that much, it's just what I have to do to get everything done.
Same, I work 60ish probably on average, email around the clock (not usually a problem, thankfully) and work on weekends and at night. I wouldn't label myself exceptionally ambitious, nor am I in love with work or career, it's just what it takes to be in this field.

Yes and no.
I feel like more so than some of my counterparts, I stay "plugged in" outside of work. I'll respond to emails I get even if I'm in bed going to sleep. I don't ever want people to have the impression of me that I take too long to respond to things, or am lazy and slow to get things done. I frequently check on things at work even when I'm on vacation. Etc.
However, if I could quit work tomorrow and never work a day in my life I would do it in a heartbeat. I would really prefer to just be lazy and do what I want all the time and not have any responsibilities.

Eh, it's a good way to keep yourself motivated. But if I do my job well and the owner works harder, good for him, he's got way more of a vested interest than I do. To me it's just a job to do to fund my real life.
This is a hypothetical, but that's how I might view it.

Frick work. I put in my share of 16 hr days but gtfo asap to get home to my family. I know guys who work their arse off in the sun for 10 hrs just to knock off and go cut yards for extra change. That to me is a workaholic.

I find that I enjoy working a lot. It's only my second month with the company, but I'm in the office around 6:30a and don't leave until around 5:45/6p. I am constantly busy because of the nature of my industry (a lot of times I have to drop something and work on something else that takes priority), but that works well with my personality and strengths. However, I need to start realizing that I'm not going to get everything on my "to-do" list done each day, and know when to call it quits so I don't get burned out too quickly. Let's face it: I'm going to be working until I die, or else I'd get bored. Don't want to grow to hate it too quickly

Of course. Scruffy isn't a teacher.

Agreed. I'm a "playaholic". I'm in my last 4-6 years of employment (hopefully).
I've never heard of anyone on their deathbed saying, "I wish I had spent more time at the office".....actually, quite the opposite.

Typical day:
Arrive 7:30 AM, work through lunch, leave 5:30 PM. so I typically work 50 hours a week. Sometimes an hour or two over that.

What are you overcompensating for?
Posted on 7/22/15 at 12:14 pm to Swoopin
Absolutely, work 6-7 days a week even when everybody else is at 40hrs. I spend at least 10 hours at work without anybody else there. I love to work on a Saturday by myself. It's quiet and I complete more jobs than usual.

Why?

The job I have demands it,my boss doesn't make me do it . Plus the extra time is used to organize the department better.

I work 7 days on / 7 off
84 hours one week then off 7 days.
I'm staring at the clock til 5 when working, then borderline unreachable on days off.
I enjoy getting shite done but I'm not dedicating my life to work.

I don't see myself ever having this problem. There is too much out there to explore and experience to be bored.
I am NOT a workaholic. When projects come up that need to be done asap I will put in the extra hours. Otherwise I am happy with my 40 hours and spending the additional time with friends, family, and hobbies. If I owned my own business my answer would be different.

As long as you are being compensated for the work you do.

It does in a way . During the negation phase it was known that time needs to be taken without anybody there so the salary was raised before I signed up.

I work the absolute minimum, never volunteer for OT, and don't stay a second longer than I'm required to be there. I'd rather enjoy my life with my wife & kids. I've been offered promotions with more hours and time away from my family, and have politely declined each time.
You die at the end, so I choose to enjoy the time I've got in this life.

Yes, not because of the hours I do at my day job though. Have my hands in other things to get ahead one day and work my arse off. Enjoy it though, so other than the time away from the kids, it's all good. I just cut back some though and sold my main little business. I'm always thinking about what's next though.
