our government also gives a metric frick ton of aid to international causes and other countries (although some of that is seen as warmongering, mainly re: Israel) and we basically pay for the defense of Europe and almost the world and that has all but eliminated international conflict

we aren't perfect but we "give" a LOT of money to the world

One of the more self indulgent for sure but also very generous when called for.

Maybe, my international classmates like to say that we are.

But then I kindly remind them that my country can wipe their country off the map. Then I walk away with a smile feeling accomplished and superior.

Just because we donate to charities means that we aren't selfish as a nation?

Most should know about how the Susan G Komen charity uses a large % of the donations on overhead and a small percentage on actually research "for the cure". LINK

The American Red Cross is the largest charity in the USA and here is an interesting quote on them:

quote:

That is because of the unusual structure of the Red Cross. Most of what the Red Cross does is take donated blood and sell it to health care providers. Of the more than $3 billion that the Red Cross spent last year, two-thirds was spent not on disaster relief but rather on the group's blood business. The charity spent $2.2 billion on the blood business, most of which went to employee wages and benefits. By contrast, the charity spent $467 million, or 14 percent of total spending, on its famous domestic disaster response programs, including the expensive Sandy relief effort. Nonprofit experts say that in combining the blood business spending with disaster relief spending, the Red Cross is painting a confusing picture of its operations for donors. "It probably has the effect of making the Red Cross look better than it actually is," says Jack Siegel, a lawyer who runs the consulting firm Charity Governance. If the Red Cross split its blood business from the rest of the charity, "their ratios would look worse. So they don't want to do that," says Borochoff of CharityWatch.

I will say that I think most Americans aren't selfish, just the powers at be are making the citizens look way worse and selfish than what we really are.

If that is true, then why were we so scared of some Muslims hiding out in a cave, who had to rely on stealing airplanes to attack us on US soil?

Also I think the USA has shown the world that we will use nukes on innocent women and children, so I think that is why most countries wouldn't want to go to war with us. Maybe Russia and China would pose a real threat, but not any in the middle east. The point is, that I think it is complete bullshite when they say that we would somehow lose our freedom if the troops weren't overseas fighting to keep it safe. Unless some country takes over the USA, we aren't losing any of our personal freedom to them. In fact, we are losing more of our freedom to local threats such as politicians and cops.

No, I'd venture to say we give more to charity than any other nation and our poor are probably the most well off as a whole. It's probably just your generational bias showing.

Social media makes everything seem worse than it really is.

I'm sure you do. And you are Exhibit A as to proving my point in my earlier post. You are a part of the problem not the solution. And it is that very arrogant attitude that will be the downfall of this country if people don't wake up and enlighten themselves.

No. it's the Arabian Peninsula as a whole. It's bar none the most selfish region in the entire world. I wouldn't step foot there unless I had no other choice.

That, UAE, and Qatar. Dubai is a shrine to selfishness. Had an acquaintance that is loaded who went there recently and attempted to justify the slavery for a bad arse indoor ski resort.

When alternative energy finally takes off the Arabian peninsula and Saudi Arabia are going to die on the vine. That will be a great day for humanity considering that Saudi Arabia is the biggest source of terrorism on the planet. I'm not for bombing countries but if I was they would be first on my list.

On a personal level, the social media and constant attachment to phones is doing something to us, and I don't think it's positive.

On a political level, as SFP said, we are very giving as a country. That said, I kind of agree with a quote from a crazy arse writer I used to love.

quote:

The US economy, driven by a fiat currency, fractional reserve banking, debt-based financing –- and “doped” with the billions of dollars of drug profits laundered through its corporations and banks –- is a superheated pyramid scheme of infinite growth wherein 5% of the world’s population consumes 25% of the world’s energy and a totally disproportionate share of the world’s diminishing resources and commodities.

Spot on. And I agree about social media. It has some positive points but I think the downside is much greater. It is turning humans into narcissistic, socially alienated freaks in my opinion. I can hardly hold an intelligent conversation with young people today. They seem socially stunted in many ways. These kids need to get outside, get some exercise and connect with nature. It would make them much happier, well rounded people.

Thought this was about the LSU tiger nation... Would have said yes. Globally... No. Look at all of the European countries that receive money from us and/or have so many social programs. That screams more selfish than the US, but we are catching up.

I think it is totally justified considering the type of assholes they probably have to deal with on a daily basis. A large percentage of Americans are nothing more than entitled, spoiled assholes. If they disappeared tomorrow the world would be a much better place in which to live.

And for the people who actually think we're a very selfish country, here's how you can tell whether a country is selfish or not: how they treat their poor and disabled. I think we in America do a pretty good job at that, maybe too good of a job since it's allowing them to actually take advantage of the system at large. Now go look at somewhere like Saudi Arabia or North Korea and see how they treat them.
