I thought this was going to be an OweO thread when I clicked.

We are responsible for our own decisions.
It is a bit more nuanced and complicated than that. We were all born into a system we did not consent to and have to adapt as survive the best we can.

Not everyone, but most are like myself and I hate it.
When things get bad, I always talk of doing something that I enjoy/less stressful, but makes less money. I never end up doing it, because it always comes back to not being able to support the family.

No we are slaves to the pensioned government and municipal workers who don’t have to save one dollar to retire. With interest rates this low it is like the janitor has a 15Mm annuity.

Go be a government janitor if it is such an awesome job.
Also, governments can go bankrupt too you know.

I agree we are all slaves. But we choose our master.
Will we choose money, sex, drugs, alcohol, fame, worldly trappings?
Or will we choose to be a slave for Jesus Christ? And pursue that which is above?

You don’t have to choose that route but it’s hard not to in a capitalist society.
As far as technology, it’s designers are smarter than us. But you can still tune out with a little discipline.

Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities; all is vanity!

can't be king of the world if you're slave to the grind

With a spirit of baptism you are no longer a slave but a son.

They can. But that will happen long after you and everyone else in this country is financially ruined.

If you buy into the mainstream American culture of strip malls, chain restaurants, Disney, McBeer, and super hero movies, then pretty much Yes.

ah yes
because living in your 1930s bungalow, eating at the trendy ramen shop around the corner, then hitting up the local taproom to grab drinks for the indie theater doesn't require money

I think it's more, we were born in such a prosperous society that we've traded survival for "needing" other things (e.g. money).
People who live in poverty-stricken societies are a "slave" to food, shelter, water, etc. We take for granted that we have all of that taken care of, and without those basic survival necessities to worry about, we "slave" over the next thing we think we need.

Nice try, but I do zero of those things....
When I lost a lot of things during the Katrina year, I learned that I was wrong in thinking I needed all that shite to be happy.
