But I don't know a single 'democrat' that has even brought up the monument issue.

My guess, is that they don't give a shite, because they know they're going to come down. If I was black, and was trying to raise my kids in the city, it would be a big deal to me. I would want to raise my kids in a place that had a statue celebrating the belief that they weren't as good as other people because of their skin color.

But if you're white, there other problems they're concerned about. Just because they're not vocal, doesn't mean they agree with them. There's probably also Orleans Republicans that agree with their removal.

Saying this to defend a monument, which was erected with the explicit purpose of memorializing racists and the violence they perpetrated, is very dubious.

I don't even care about the liberty place monument. It honors a bunch of democrats. But I still disagree with tearing down history to support a political whim. And remember that one day the shoe will be on the other foot.

people get murdered every where and all the time. It has been happening since the dawn of man.

Wow...so every city has a murder rate like New Orleans, or Chicago?

Every small town is having people murdered in the street by thugs every day? How dumb are you?

quote:

Potholes are more important then racism?

How nebulous and specious is this argument.

And yes, yes EMPHATICALLY YES!

Potholes negatively affect many people on the daily Basis.

When was the last time some tucked away obelisk hurt anyone?

quote:

And I am not diminishing the concerns you put forth. Crime, corruption and infrastructure are all priorities. Things don't have to be either or.

The budget is limited. It does have to be either or. And since the streets and crime and corruption aren't being fixed they obviously aren't as priority as some statues.

Most agree the liberty monument sucks, in a stupid place and could come down. Start ripping up Jackson square and P.T. and you have a problem.

Well when you get to frame the narrative you can make anything you want a "symbol of hate and racism".

By your nebulous definition, all the fleur de lis need to come down. All the plantations (do the ones that were owned by black slaveowners have to come down too? I'm unclear on that.)

Let's tear down the oak trees too since they may have been used to hang people.

Hmmm...better tear down all the antebellum houses in New Orleans too because they were probably owned by people who had or used slaves.

Burn all the sugar cane fields too.

Slavery and all.

In fact, let's just remove every vestige of the white devils and become the epitome of humanity like Haiti became once they killed all the whites.

Now you're just being as dramatic as the SJWs you love to bitch about. You're no different, just on opposite sides of an issue.

Exactly, so why all the fuss to remove them and spending taxpayers money to do so.

?

I apologize if I'm coming off as condescending. I'm just pointing out a flaw in your logic. Inside the city of New Orleans, it's very liberal.

What assumptions do you disagree with?

Ordinance Calendar 31,082

quote:

The ordinance declares the monuments erected and maintained to honor Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, the Battle of Liberty Place, and PGT Beauregard as nuisances, calls for the removal of these monuments from outdoor display, and specifically revokes the dedication of the Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee monuments.

For the last time...at the request of the Mayor, the New Orleans City Council called a special session and voted to declare the monuments nuisances AND to have the removed.

Yet, a statue of that horrible racist Robert E. Lee stood in a prominent circle in the city for 130 years (throughout decades of racial change and upheaval, and changing demographics) with barely a peep from any citizen regarding its existence up until about 2 years ago.

Weird.

(edited to correct the spelling of 'statue' from how Mitch pronounces it. )

Once again, not the main purpose of those structures.

I guess what I was tying to say is that the city was voting to declare the monuments a public nuisance and the mayor parleyed that by:

quote:

Landrieu invoked a city law that permits the removal of any statue deemed a "public nuisance" to make his case. The council, with its vote, agreed.

So by the council voting that the statues were a public nuisance,, also meant they were voting to take them down because thats was the point in the vote

All that. You only assume that there would be cross aisle support for removal. I guarantee you there are many more on the liberal side that would not want them down than there are conservatives that do want them down. And that's if you only ask the question in a vacuum. When it comes time to fund their removal over more pressing needs, even less people would choose to remove them.

I fee like that is fairly common sense.

You blew up your own argument with your first point. Most of those monuments do not have the sole purpose of memorializing violence toward minorities.

Obviously the monument doesn't. But it is there for memorializing an event that did.

Just because one or two dumbass extremists say something, doesn't mean you should give it any acknowledgement. Because a klansman says something racist and violent, doesn't mean I think even your average racist person agrees with it.

Common sense dictates that none of these things will ever happen...

Let's tear down the oak trees too since they may have been used to hang people.

Trying fixing a road panel or sidewalk next to an oak tree in Orleans or Jefferson Parish. You're not allowed to touch those roots at all, and usually require an arborist consolation before even beginning demo. They're not pulling out a chainsaw ever.

quote:

all the fleur de lis need to come down.

An interesting one. I've never heard it, and I know some very liberal people there, of all ages. But I did find an article about it, quoting the person who was upset by them.

quote:

“As an African I find it painful, and I think people whose ancestors were enslaved here may feel it even harder than I do as an African,” said slave historian Dr. Ibrahima Seck to WWLTV.

Damn, that's fricked up. Time to organize a prot...

quote:

The symbol is emblazoned throughout the city of New Orleans, and is the official symbol of Louisiana after Governor Bobby Jindal signed a law in 2008. Due to this fact, Seck also believes it shouldn’t be taken down as it is now embraced as a symbol of unity.

So, controversy for no reason. No wonder everyone in America is fed up with sensationalized journalism, that's? become prevalent over the last couple decades.

Next...

quote:

Burn all the sugar cane fields too.

So, the government is going to burn down privately owned farm land? Just because some trust fund chick with dreadlocks is offended? You're giving Moonbeam too much credit.

quote:

All the plantations
quote:

better tear down all the antebellum houses in New Orleans too because they were probably owned by people who had or used slaves.

Again, the government isn't burning down private property. And if they own any plantations as a park, even if Moonbeam bribed and blew her way and succeeded, they wouldn't burn an antique house, they'd sell it. But that happening is a extremely far reach.

So because people get murdered everywhere (what does this even mean in context? Are you suggesting murder rates are the same across time and space?) It means that the horrible crime rate in New Orleans is insconsequential to some statues a few people made manufactured outrage against?
