Bought my wife, sorry no pics, a 2012 Passat tdi diesel. The first three oil/maintenance changes, every 10,000 miles, were free at the dealership, part of the warranty program. When she took it for the 40,000 one, it was over $1000. They changed everything on it. All of this in less than 2 years of having the car. Needless to say I traded it in before the next oil change. Other than that, she loves the car. It got unbelievable fuel mileage. Around town it averaged probably mid 30’s and on the interstate it was almost 45. We went to the masters in it one year and I got over 800 miles on one tank of fuel. The tank was 18 gallons

The only problems I’ve had with my 2007 GTI were a wheel bearing and an engine speed sensor. I take it to an independent shop and repairs and maintenance aren’t anymore expensive than they are for my wife’s Honda. It’s a great car and a lot more fun than the Honda and Toyota I owned previously.

Do you like Torx bolts? The Germans find reasons to put those bastards everywhere.

We had a 05 Jetta, and it needed a wiring harness before 100k. Buddy had the next generation, and he got 250k out of it, and still going. I've got folks who swear by them, but my experience has been mediocre at best.

I'd trust Consumer Reports and resale values, instead of anecdotal stories from the OT.

There's a reason the VW Taos has an overall score of 55 and poor predicted reliability. There is also a reason that you can pick up VWs used, at a pretty big savings over a comparable Honda or Toyota.

My anecdotal story-
Bought a 2016 VW CC from a guy I knew. Meticulously maintained and in terrific shape. The car was a blast to drive but ended up causing more engine issues than any car I've ever owned in 34 years. So bad, that I couldn't look someone in the eye and sell it with a good conscience. Had to trade it and auction.

Good luck.

Consider a Mazda. They are just as nice to drive and medium-luxurious like a VW, but don't have the issues a VW has.

That said I like renting Jettas when Im on the road, very fun.

I have an 03 TDI Jetta with 5 speed manual. Good on fuel, average about 47-48 driving 80mph

Backroads taking it easy I get over 50mpg. It has 335,000 miles. Bought it used with 220,000. Has been reliable but the interior is complete shite. I think the interiors have gotten better but some of the diesels made after this particular model were less reliable.

Short answer: yes.

They are made with cheap parts. The engineering and manufacturing isn’t necessarily the worst. But the cheap parts and the German complexity of maintenance and repairs is what drives mechanics nuts. I personally wouldn’t touch one. My sister had an ‘11 Tiguan that my dad got when he was for some odd reason infatuated with VW. The fricker blew both a water pump and head gasket after my dad put hours of work into it to repair the EGR valve, crankshaft position sensor, and do a valve adjustment. Never again.

That being said, I love my VW. It's cute, it's safe, and I get good gas mileage.

Did you just say cute?

Stay away from ALL Eurotrash vehicles. They are all expensive to maintain, and even when you do maintain them, they are still a POS.

My first car when I was in HS was a ‘69 Bug.

I wish I still had it. It was a fun car.

I had a MkIV Jetta for 17 years. I kick myself all the time for selling it. I currently own a Subaru, Ford, and Toyota, and cost of maintenance has been no worse than those three.
