How easy is it to get an entry level job, part time, doing car sales as a 53 year old who has never done it? What’s the pay structure like?

Damn, getting a divorce is as bad as having felonies and drug and alcohol problems now?

Knew a guy I grew up with in the Lower 9th Ward who dropped out of school and eventually became a used car salesman at one of those real shady lots that would pop up in neighborhoods on empty lots, then disappear after a year or so.

He reminded me of the character Looney in the movie "Let It Ride" with Richard Dreyfus and he actually sounded like him too. He was a schemer/scammer for sure and he could never remember your name. He'd call everyone "Hots" and came off like a cheap pimp.

Twenty years pass and the guy was still selling used cars. What a career path............

I knew a guy who owned a tote the note lot. The down payment on his cars was the amount he paid for the car at auction. He would repossess a car and resell it. He made a lot of money.

there are a limited number of used car sales jobs that comp can be in the mid 6 figures but you aren't selling Altimas and 20 yo Civics.

I worked at several new car dealerships and the salesmen on the used car side usually seemed to do better than the guys on the new car side. The commissions were quite a bit higher than on new cars.

I'll take the compliment.

but I've seen them get vacuumed out and sold the next day.

Well sure I'm sure there are slimeball sleazebags. That's where the stereotype comes from.

But at some point it needs to be on the consumer to say "hey, KBB shows it's this price in good condition and none of the problems have been fixed."

I mean that's why there are lemon laws.

Yep, I've worked at both kinds

I just find it hard to believe that EVERY place that sells vehicles is populated by terrible people. I've known people that sold cars and for the most part they've just been baws.

Somebody already broke it down but its designed to get you focused on everything but the sale price of the vehicle. Get you focused on what down payment they need to get you to the payment you want. Essentially get you in a "buy down" the payment mode. "Oh you want 400 a month payments? That's easy, we'll need 8k down to get that payment you want"

What it's really indicative of is an effort to squeeze the customer. Same goes with a car lot that doesn't have prices on the vehicles themselves. You can be certain if the price is not posted on the vehicle then it changes based off of the whims of the sales manager/salesman. Say they own it for 18k but the salesman wants to try and sell it for 20k.

When I was aimless and uncertain of what I wanted to do car sales helped pay the bills but long term I dont believe I would've liked what I would've become. Glad I got out and have an opportunity to share info that could save others some money.

They are basically lawyers selling used cars, but with more ethics.

OWNING a used car lot is pretty profitable. Doing predatory financing for high risk customers who will likely have those cars repo’d halfway through financing is even better.

Being the sales guy is probably trash.

I sell commercial and residential moving, it’s not much better than car sales.

Can you elaborate? What do you mean by “I sell commercial…moving” and why is it not much better than car sales? I’m sure there’s plenty of calling on people that you notice are moving, but I’d assume (probably wrongly) that you get a decent amount of incoming calls from people looking for your services. Or at least getting quotes/estimates.

I’ve had a thought about getting into this business and would appreciate the insight.
