Are TV and other media outlets slowly destroying Southern accents?

I recently watched some old home movies from 30 years ago and it seemed like the accents of my family members were more pronounced than today. Maybe it was just the recording medium. But I still have to wonder if our more connected world endagering or even eliminated some of the traditional Southern dialects and accents?

They want everyone normalized (in a statistical sense, not the other way) so we all follow Washington lock step.

The Southern accent and identity is dying. We're all being herded into the soulless world of mass American culture.

Southern accents began to fade out of Hollywood w/ the decline of the western. By the end of the Burt Reynolds good ole boy era, it had almost disappeared completely. Nowadays it is difficult for actors to get cast in their natural voices, unless the part specifies Southern.

This is largely due to TPTB, who regard the South as an alien place. The great sportswriter and sometime novelist Dan Jenkins once complained that if Philip Roth or someone writes about a neighborhood in Brooklyn, he's commenting on the universal condition, but if anyone deals w/the South, an area stretching from Texas to Virginia, he's a "regional writer".

Why has higher education in areas like the North East had little affect on their native accent?

Off Off Topic: I'd rather read jewelry ads in a Garden and Gun. What an insufferable, overrated douche. (Said in the thickest backwoods Mississippi accent I can muster.)

ETA: shite, I just remembered he died last year. I don't like disrespecting the dead. But he was a dogmatic atheist, so he has no soul. J/k.

It's not just Southern accents. New England, Midwest etc. TV producers put a lot of emphasis on non regional diction. They want everyone to have a corporatized neutral accent
