I remember being approached by one in the early 2000s when I was young. I was confused but I wanted to believe them about them needing to get rid of extra inventory. I had no money at the time and didn't look like someone who did, so not sure why they approached me. After I explained this they lost interest and went away. When I got home I told my dad and he had a good laugh. I've never seen this scam being pulled since then.

Anyone else ever had this happen to them? Any recent?

Used to happen to me in the early 2000s all of the time. I guess people stopped putting aftermarket sound systems in. It's kind of like getting your CD player stolen out of your vehicle. Time have changed.

Too easy to pull out your smartphone and find a better system for a better price nowadays.

Had a guy in an explorer pull this stunt outside my credik union about 7-8 years ago

Couldn't sell inventory
Overstocked
Here's a magazine listing it at 800
I'll take 200

Told him 50 and he went on his way

Yep. I got a pair in the early 90’s. They said they had just dropped off a 4 at Murphy’s and noticed they had 2 extras.

For $250, I could have them.

So I wrote them a check and still use them today as my back surround sound speakers. Acoustic Monitor is the brand.

Happened to me I'd say about 5 years ago. It was two dudes in a truck and they had on some electronics store polo shirts on and had projectors and screens in their truck and told me they were given more than they ordered and they were supposed to be delivering the equipment to a restaurant and they just wanted to sell these extras under the table quickly for a huge discount.

Showed me a BS price tag and a BS invoice for the projectors at like thousands apiece.

I could sense something was off and declined and went on my way.

There is this dude that drives an old white suburban that hangs out in the Home depot parking lot on Coursey. He hit me up about 2 weeks ago

Buddy of mine did, hook, line and sinker. Off I-49 north of Natchitoches. He only had a hundred, went to the ATM at the store and got more money. Thought he made out big time.

Haha. Like Acoustic Research, huh?

I just wonder how someone even gets involved in one of these things. There usually are a few guys who run the scam, which happened in my case.

Exactly.
But after 25 years, I can’t complain.

I’ve got to change out the woofers. The paper has gotten brittle.

I honestly had no idea this was a scam, and I had entirely forgotten about my experience until I saw this thread.

Sometime in '02, '03 maybe, I was at the Shell station by the back entrance to CCLA buying lunch, and a panel van pulled up.

Guy jumped out an said "HEY BRAH YOU WANNA BUY SOME BIGASS SPEAKERS FOR YOUR HOME?!"

It scared the shite out of me. I just looked at him and said "huh?"

He jumped back in the van and hauled arse. It confused me so bad.

Now they just walk up to you while you are pumping gas and tell you their meemaw is in the hospital down the way and they need bus fare.

I bought a pair from a garage sale for like $20. They looked great. Then I got home and googled them, and figured out they were white van scam speakers. But they actually sounded really great. I had them for several years. For $20, they were worth it.

I cant tell you how many times I was approached in the early 2000s. They were always the same tower speakers and the price offer was always different. One buddy bought a pair for a couple hundred bucks. They were not broken or anything. They sound ok. I laughed my arse at one dude who said they were worth 1000 per pair. I asked to see the manual and it was a single page photocopy.

I'm guessing once smartphones came out, pretty much nobody would fall for it anymore.

I had no idea this was a thing. I had a guy approach me in the parking lot outside of Which Wich on Siegen about three weeks ago and tell me he just received some extra inventory and needed to dump it quick. Obviously, I wasn't going to buy from some guy in his truck, so I declined.

I didn't know this actually happened though. This is kind of crazy to me now.
