My story is very similar. Picked some up in 1990. Said they had delivered six to a buyer, but the store had accidentally loaded six pair in the van. I only had $150. I used those speakers for about ten years, then gave them to my brother. He used them for another fifteen.

May be a scam, but it was a pretty good value for a scam.

What exactly is the scam? Were they stolen or something?

The scam is that they are selling you some cheap arse speakers for a lot more than they are worth.

Once upon a time, Acoustic Research was a respected brand.
Same goes for Aiwa, Nakamichi, Sansui, etc.
