Do you? Got it much much cheaper at petmeds

I do. And when customers use petmeds, chewy, etc., it makes it very difficult. This, along with a massive Veterinarian shortage is why so many are selling to corporate.

Are these questions you are requesting the doctor answer?
Hell no, they are more like "Have you received the new shipment of Simparica Trio", or "Do you have space for boarding my dog around Labor Day"?
Simple yes or no questions.

Back to the Dr. Ford post. Many years ago I brought in a litter of 6 pups for their first visit. Sat down and looked around the packed waiting room and saw no one else with any pups or cats. He was the best and cheapest in the B.R. area.

So, I put the cat in a pillow case and go see Dr. Ford.

The old man is great. His son seems terrified of animals.

Or are they all now corporate owned animal clinics with so many vets, and such a high turnover rate that you never get the same doc twice?
Number of reasons. The big one is that Corps are paying very big money for practices. its hard for any newer vet working for a practice owner to compete with the type of buyout money they are offering. So when the "old guy" is ready to cash out, the newer vets at the practice usually dont even have the option to buy in and find themselves working for corporate then and there. This has been a point of contention for new vets who actually want to buy into a practice. Some of the older guys dont have much of an option either, as sometimes there is literally no one to sell the practice to. This is particularly true in smaller towns. Most newer vets arent attracted to those areas of work. Good luck finding a farm vet these days, and in the future. Almost no one is going into that.
its not all bad for the vets though. Corp tends to pay a little better and comes with some more flexibility in working hours and way better benefits. Vet medicine has traditional be very low pay to the amount of effort put in to achieve a degree and the amount of loans you incur. I do worry what will happen when almost all private owned clinics are bought out, but the corporates scene seems so competitive now i dont it will impact veterinarians too much.
Another nice thing about corp medicine, you dont have to take shite from clients. Vets get treated like shyster car mechanics always looking to screw you over. Greedy. Despite the fact that i know many colleague who ate ramen noodles every night trying to pay their vet school loans off. Such a lavish lifestlye. This is literally a quote from another thread on here right now
quote:This shite happens all the time. "fix my dog doc.....i only got 20 bucks. What do you mean it costs that much...you greedy a-hole!"
Get a second opinion. If the other vet does a quick analysis and says “fatty tissue”. Drop your other vet for trying to milk a few bucks out of you and distress your dog for no reason.
much easier to tell people "well, its corporates policy, they set the rates and rules". I didnt go into private practice in large part because i didnt want to deal with the general public clientele and have not regretted it one day. For every 1 good client, there are 5 real dickheads right behind them.

Lol. When I saw the title to this thread I thought of Dr. Ford. He has some Nazi signs and stuff in his office.
We had the meanest Doberman Pincher around at the time. He would handle it like a toy dog.
Good times

So what did they have?

Yeah recently as high as 15-20x. So consumers dont understand why there are so few "old school" vets aka just simply cheaper.

Ehh. For the customer it is and sometimes even the vet. Yeah the vets get to work 3-4 days a week but the consumer doesnt want to see a different vet each time. Yeah they may pay more, but they almost always have negative accrual in their contracts. Which most vets never get out of when they only work 3-4 days a week. Makes it almost impossible to make production at times.

You dont have to do that at private practices that are run properly.

this is true. I dont know why some vets are so hesitant to fire clients. its not like there is any shortage of them these days.
easy for me to say in my ivory tower of non private practice specialty :)

It's simple:
Find a bet vet that also does large animal.
Small animal, dogs, cats., etc, are completely emotion driven.
Large animal involves vets that can speak economic consequences. Large animal is much more male on the scale. Large animal vets are more likely to tell you that you could spend $2k to get another three weeks with the dog before it's lungs filled up with fluid that couldn't be drained, and they were going to die anyway.
Small animal only vets are typically far more likely to come at you with rich chick energy (anything for my fluffy!)

This exact thought is what we just discussed. Most people have this idea that "large animal, old school, etc." means what they think it means. Really what you want is lower price and I can speak to the vet anytime.
Large animal only currently exists at large processing areas, Equestrian/rodeo/competition areas regionally, or in the middle of nowhere. So everyday clients only have access to the middle of nowhere/rural vets which rarely have much corporate competition.
Your idea of small animal vets being emotionally driven is simply a subjective view on the value of your dollar.
