I don't think you can be forced out of your home. Mandatory evacuation basically means if you decide to stay, noone will come to help you or rescue you once the SHTF.

In South Carolina they can physically remove you from your house but the gov said they wouldn't waste resources on that. He made it sound like they were one of the few states that could legally do it

You'd have to be some kind of special crazy to stay on the Keys. I'd like to see what sort of structures these people are going to ride it out in. Houses on stilts? Entire islands are going to be submerged.

Mostly. If people in St. Johns ajd Bar uda survived, the people in the Leys will, but there life will likely suck for a month after.

You are overlooking the fact that major population centers will come first in regards to first responders.
Those folks on the islands are truly on their own.

A friends boyfriend stayed. When "center line" of track was going up east side of Florida he reasoned that the keys would be on the "good side" of the storm. Now that track has shifted, they are pretty nervous. Not sure he has a way out at this point. He and two others will go to one house that they say is like a fortress and elevated.
She is a nervous wreck.
Edit: they thought about taking the boat but a 42 foot boat in 14- 18 foot waves last night didn't sound like a good option.

Exactly. They don't have the time or inclination to go door to door looking for these evildoers.
I wager they'll get fined if they actually do get rescued and it requires spending inordinate amounts to do so.

Is the interstate-bridge out not set up for contraflow, gridlocked, or closed? Or am I over thinking this, does your friend not have a vehicle?
I don't understand how someone doesn't just get up and drive out. Winds on the outer bands can't be that bad.

They do have vehicles available to them. Must not have been an option for some reason since she was showing my wave heights in reference to leaving via boat.

If I was in Key West the way Irma is tracking, and I had a vehicle and gas, I would head to Miami. It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing. Have to imagine you can find a room or shelter there since so many people evacuated.

Key West has a county jail, right? That would be the safest spot to ride this storm out with their concrete enforced walls. The rinky dink home we rented a few years back certainly will not be standing after Irma hits.

The one my family frequents probably wouldn't fair well on its own. But the way they are built, similar to new orleans, on top if each other probably only makes the roof susceptible.
Wonder if there will be cheap property available after the storm.

The Key West threat to life isn't the wind as much as it is the storm surge. The highest point is only 18 feet and they are expecting 10-15 feet on most of the island per TypoKing.
