Are The Ouachita Mountains An Overlooked Gem For People In Louisiana?

I grew up in a po dunk little town in north Louisiana. We took several trips to the ouachita mountains to escape the flatness and heat of the Bayou State when I was growing up.
Just a couple hours drive north and we were in forested mountains, cooler and less humid weather, and fast moving whitewater.
I never knew or heard of many people in Louisiana getting away for a weekend or holiday to the mountains just north of our state line. I think if I still lived in Louisiana that I would have built a vacation cabin in the ouachita mountains.

Shreveport people goto arkansas and far eastern Oklahoma all the time to camp

I'd rather go to Flora Bama and hang out with Bama fans then go be around Arkansas fans

The Ouachita and Ozark Higlands trails are great. You can day hike a section or do multi day hikes.

Fun fact: only mountain range in us that goes east/west
Another fun fact: tallest hill in the world is in poteau, ok. Elevation 1999 feet

Sounds fun,
All except for the having to be 'shreveport people' and all

I go backpacking 4 or 5 times a year there, it’s a beautiful place and a lot of people in North Louisiana have no idea it’s only 3 hours away.

Crater of Diamonds could be interesting on the way to/from those glorified hills. My late sister back around 1984 found a 1ct. mom still has one a necklace. Last month a guy found a 2ct. Man finds 2.2ct diamond in AR - Breitbart

The Ouachita Mountainsare a broad mountain range like an upside down U shape (looking to the north). They emerge from the coastal plain in Oklahoma and go east until they go under the coastal plain there.
The mountains in Oklahoma are a lot drier; Arkansas biota is wetter.
There aren't that many north south roads across them. The peaks in the Ouachitas are deep water-deposited cherts which used to be the source of knife sharpening stones.
That part of the world hasn't been 'open' to civilizations for very long (not even two centuries).
North of the Ouachitas are more mountains (but not thrust faulted) and they are more of a tourist destination.

Quite the glutton for punishment. I might be able to do one or the other but not both back to back.

“Mountains”
Well, they’re not as grand as the mountains here in my adopted home state of Georgia but they’re still beautiful mountains.
Seriously, I can hike to multiple waterfalls like Amicalola just 1 hour north of Atlanta.
But the Ouachita Mountains deserve their praise.
I feel like people in Shreveport and north Louisiana are aware.

Just got back from Lake Ouachita. Utopia for a person who resides in Shreveport.

I take my vacations to the wonderful scene of the Southside of Monroe. Lots of unknowns to explore down there
