Are the facial gestures necessary when doing sign language? Serious question

I notice that a person signing usually uses speech/facial gestures while signing. Is this a part of the sign language?

Not at all.

It isn’t as if deaf people can see the facial gestures anyway.

Ive got good hearing and i like to use subtitles on movies and tv shows.


Why? Because any added context helps.

it's a good question because the press conference here in Houston yesterday had everyone on stage wearing a mask except the guy signing, I asked my wife the same thing.

My step daughter in college (no pics), is taking a class in sign language. She says it is important, because deaf people rely heavily on reading lips and understand signing more when you animate the word. A while back, I asked her the same question.
