Are the facial gestures necessary when doing sign language?
It would be like Alexa reading you a story vs a person telling a story. The person will make it more interesting and engaging, and is able to help set the mood and communicate a lot more meaning than what the bare words themselves can.

My son who is taking ASL at UofA told me the same thing, facial expression is highly encouraged and the true professionals all do it.
I thought it was BS until everybody started wearing masks and I realized how hard it is to tell what the hell everyone is saying when I can't see their mouth!!

Yes because asl is very generalized it’s not exact and signs have changed over the years

Garrett Morris was very fluent in "hard of hearing" language the first couple of year of SNL, you know, when it was funny.
