Passed the local Skating rink just now and the parking lot was a ghost town. Back in the day on a Friday night the place would’ve been shoulder to shoulder. Egyptian Lover would’ve been blaring and everyone would’ve been skating their asses off. Damn I miss the 80’s…

Around here they've turned into hooligan hangouts on evening/weekends. No longer a safe enough space to dump a gaggle of 13yr olds.

Not where I'm at

My daughter loves to skate and she goes to the same skating rink that me and my sister went to as kids in the late '80's-90's. They've been open for 44 years(same owners)and they are still raking.

Even white kids in Houston still have birthday parties there (girls 9-13).

About 5 years ago my daughter wanted a skate rink birthday party. We loaded up the suburban with six 9 year olds to the Slidell rink.
Girl had the time of their lives. She still says that was her favorite birthday party.

Roller Kingdom II was a cool place but in retrospect kinda weird. Seemed to peak around 86-87.
Couldn’t have been located worse, wayyy deep into Covington and on the outskirts. Probably got a lot of HS traffic being across the street but by the time I was in HS it wasn’t really a cool spot anymore.

Legal liability alone would deter me from opening one. It’s sad.

Not only are they not all defunct, my cousin has a couple of boys who participate in speed skating at roller rinks. I did not know the sport existed until last week. They do it early in the morning so they can still open up in the evenings.

I never thought I’d miss the 90s.

Funation on Congress.

it can get a little sketchy depending on when you go, like any of those types of places.
but its not very expensive to rent the entire place for a birthday party. any ive been too have been great.

Kids don’t leave the house now.
Skating rinks, malls, riding bikes until you get a DL, just the occasional movie or sleepover.
