Check the expiration date.

In all seriousness, I've always found it odd as a Catholic that crawfish were acceptable on a day where you are supposed to fast and avoid meat.

Odd may not be the right word, but it always felt like it was a loophole. Catholics in Louisiana look forward to Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. I don't believe that was the original intention.

5 Delicious Animals You Can Eat During Lent
quote:

#4. The Alligator

New Orleans' archbishop said in an email to one of his members that the church's national conference of bishops considers alligator to be a fish and therefore safe for Catholics to eat on Fridays during Lent, even though the animal is actually a reptile and is technically a dinosaur. Locals are therefore free to delight in the deep-frying of a formerly endangered species because a man with no scientific background reclassified alligators in an email he sent one afternoon.
quote:

#1. Corned Beef

Whoever came up with Lent (we're looking at you, Jesus) clearly didn't take St. Patrick's Day into account when they finalized the scheduling. Sometimes the beloved Irish holiday (a phrase which here means "people wear green shite and have no idea what it is they're even celebrating") falls on a Friday smack dab in the middle of Lent, and that makes it difficult for Catholics to enjoy the traditional St. Patrick's Day meal of corned beef and cabbage and enough alcohol to make them forget how pants work.

Rather than making people choose between a meaningless annual celebration and eating meat, Catholic bishops all over the country pretty much agree that it's OK for their flock to eat corned beef during Lent, even though it is red meat and emphatically contradicts the entire tradition. Because religion is nice, but the things that truly matter to people above all else are their drinking holidays.

Since I'm not religious and don't really follow these rules, is it possible to get good deals on meat for the next month or so?

They've got Boston Butts on sale at Bet-R right now. Picked up one the size of my head for $7 this morning.

I'm just waiting for all the lightning bolts to smite those who eat shellfish tonight. Should be a good show.

Chicken fried pork chop for lunch and short ribs for supper. Glad I got away from that half assed giving stuff up Catholic crap. Y'all either need to give up meat or dont. Sacrafice isn't about what is convienent for you.

Thats why I don't follow that in Louisiana. Some burden to eat a fried fish or seafood platter as opposed to a hamburger. I'd rather eat fish or seafood over everything except maybe a steak. I'll still give up something (lately its been sweets) but no point to sacrifice meat for seafood in Louisiana.

Depends on the household. My mom used to cook frozen fish sticks or tuna helper on Fridays. Even though we were in LA and she could cook very well, that kind of "seafood" is a sacrifice.

Well, I gave up Catholicism for lent a few years ago, so I'm gonna have some shellfish with my juicy ribeye tonight.
