The one in Billings cracked me up. There was a sign by the parking lot warning you to stay on the sidewalk because of rattlesnakes. I never heard anyone say rattlesnakes would not come on to sidewalks.

In states with turnpikes rest areas are great.

They're a lot easier to see on sidewalks, though.

Obsolete, no.

Why there are old shitty grills at them, I'll never know.

I'm guessing you don't travel a lot with children or women. Rest stops save at least 5-10 minutes over gas stations for a quick bathroom break.

Rest stops are always quick and easy to get off the interstate and back on at.

I can't tell you how often I've lost a half an hour to 45 minutes in line at "fast food" zoos while on road trips. It's no longer worth it to me.

I now bring my own lunch and use rest areas for my breaks from driving. It's much more efficient. Of course, when I stop for gas, I still have to deal with the crowds, but I'm done with long food line delays at least.

Funny, but when I was a kid, my parents used to do the same. Dad would get the ice chest out of the car and put it on the picnic table. We'd have sandwiches and drinks. When we were finished eating, we'd hit the restrooms and continue our trip. It's a bit nostalgic now to be doing the same.

Nope…the purpose for rest areas is not for you to have a place to piss. Those that drive trucks have limited hours of service….when their log says they stop, they have to stop. In order to keep them from parking all up and down the interstate, we have rest areas for them to stop and sleep.

There’s no thrill like stopping at a dimly lit rest area to pee at 1 am wondering if you’ll be stabbed in the bathroom

The one in Slidell is great for a piss stop if you’re drinking heavily (as a passenger, of course) on the way to New Orleans from the MS Gulf Coast. That’s all I got.

Less likely to ever use them with my family

They look and feel like dark concrete Saw dungeons the few times I have went

Would never pick one over a racetrac or the like when with the wife and kids

If it’s just me I’m pissing on the side of the road

I like that Texas visiting Center that you find after crossing the Louisiana/Texas border on I-10. Always nice people and clean restrooms.

Spend tons of time outside of the southeast. Just don’t spend it in reststop bathrooms

My favorite for a longer break is Chamberlain Rest Area in South Dakota. Great picnic area overlooking the Missouri River, some short hiking trails, neat outdoor art, Lakota interpretive center, and absolutely spotless bathrooms.

No, you spend it waiting for your kids at Racetrac (assuming you aren't just lying). The only really terrible ones are in MS and LA.

Exactly how much time do you think I spend there?

Seriously, how much time are y’all spending at rest stops with your family?

You take 2 family vacations per year. Let’s say both of those are drives. You should only need to stop once or twice

It’s minimal time regardless of where you pick. But some people in here seem to be spending a decent amount of family time there. Truly was something I didn’t know was popular. Glad they are having a good time

They come in handy in the middle of nowhere. I stop at one on I-49 between Aleandria and Lafayette every time I go to Lafayette. Because of his diuretics, if I take my dad to the doctor in Monroe, we have to stop at the one between Ruston and West Monroe.
