They've pretty much all turned into 18-wheeler sleeping parking lots.

Why wouldn’t they put gas stations at rest areas? Seems like an easy to generate revenue.

No, they are not obsolete. People still need to piss somewhere when traveling.
You too good for a gatorade bottle?

Don’t be silly.

They are essentially part of a state’s tourist marketing. I’m sure they have local value as well, but answering your question depends on whether a state cares about tourism. Texas has pretty solid rest areas up and down I-10 in addition to Bucees, that makes road travel within the state more appealing.

If states didn't operate them no one would. There's no value in them for private industry.
IMO they are pretty essential when traveling with pets or very young children.

I’m not sure if they are official rest stops, but New Jersey seems to have a lot of gas stations where you don’t even have to get off the interstate. it’s sort of looks like a rest stop, just with a gas station in it.

Mouth of the bottle too small.

They should’ve never existed. And if they have to exist, they should be contracted out into a truck stop. There’s no reason to have an unmanned parking lot in the middle of nowhere with just a bathroom and a vending machine
I agree.
They should turn rest areas into service plazas with gas, EV chargers, and food options.
They should also be required to have total limited access on and off the interstate.
Mississippi, I am looking at you at the abortion of access to the rest area on I-10 in Hancock County.
Louisiana, I am looking at you too for that half assed access to the Louisiana rest area that you can only access coming into Louisiana. Leaving, you are own your own and hopefully you make it to Mississippi.
If memory serves me correctly, Alabama’s rest area had access for both east and west bound at some point they removed the flyover ramps.

I like Tennessee's rest stop at the Kentucky border going into Tennessee. Cute little log cabin design, nice bathrooms, well lit and well manned. Has a ton of tourist info and a decent picnic area.
Like you said, when done right they're a nice spot that's safe to stop when needed.

I use to travel South Florida a lot. They had the travel stops that had pumps on the Florida Turnpike... They built them in the median and traffic both ways used the same travel stops...They were good back in those days.

We use them every road trip. Normally pack an ice chest and stop and eat lunch at a picnic table much faster and cheaper than stopping for restaurant food along the route.

Gtfo of your dwelling and someone driving.

I drive to Houston quite a bit and almost always stop at the Texas welcome center on I-10. It could use some updating, but not bad. Nice little Cyprus swamp nature walk out back. I’d miss it if it were gone.

I was happy for the I49 rest area the other day. I do think you could do like above and have a coffee shop or small convenience store there and do well. This one had plenty of traffic

Use the one 15 miles north of Brookhaven all the time. Sometimes channel my inner Snoopy and imagine I'm doing a pit stop.

I’ve been bailed out by rest stops many times when needing to take a leak in a rural area of the interstate. They are very essential.

Though few, the rest areas in Louisiana are one of the few things this state gets right. They all have nice landscaping and are well lit.

No and yes.
Was on the interstate on the East coast this weekend and people use them.
Out west where I spent alot of time they have ones that have individual picnic areas and get packed. People sleep overnight in them.
The truck-only ones are filled to capacity every night.
So you think having Buc-ee's every 200-300 miles eliminates interstate rest areas? I'd never go to one here on the East coast bc they get so damn busy. Here you have equally good options at Wawa or Sheetz that you can get in and out of much, much faster.

What an odd question. Drive by one at 5pm or later and they are full of truckers. Where will they all park for the night if rest areas are closed?
