The rent they pay requires they over charge for shite
National tenants & department stores aren't paying top rents in enclosed Mall's.

National tenants have all the leverage. The mall has to have Dept Stores (anchors) and national brands to drive traffic. National tenants pay miniscule rents, either a tiny % of gross sales or very low fixed rent.

Dept stores or big box tenants negotiate leases where they pay no taxes, insurance, or maintenance/upkeep of the common areas of the center. Landlords agree to low rental terms because they have to keep the lights or else the entire center closes up shop.

It's in a prime location and there aren't more indoor malls around nowadays. The way that I see it is that in the 80's due to the high demand for malls and for their instant success, they over built malls all around the country. Nowadays due to the boom of e-commerce, there is no need to have that many malls around. I would say depending on the size of the city, perhaps 1 or 2 malls is all you need.

Lakeside is booming because of location and a good mix of high end retailers and regular mall staples. Also, it has the only regional Apple Store/Genius Bar if you don’t want Geek Squad to mess up your Apple crap.

We used to go to Woodfield and Oakbrook malls when we lived in Chicago. Both of them are huge

I’ve been to that woodfield mall. I loved that place…it looked like breakfast club could have been filmed there. Hardcore 80s vibe.

Stranger Things was released almost a decade ago. If malls were coming back because of that show, it would have happened already.

When was season 3 released? Cause that’s the one set in the mall

2019. 5 1/2 years ago. A 16 year old today would have been 10-11 years old.

Shreveport Bossier malls are dying. Every store is either a mall hut turned store, urban shoe store, or urban clothing store.

Even our outdoor shopping Boardwalk is dead slow. I dont know how these places make it.

My kids love running in the mall though but its been a year since we've been. There are less than 5 stores for a guy like me.

In Montgomery AL, with the exceptions of Spencers and Cinnabon and JC Penney, none of the mall stores we grew up with are there anymore. Its 90 percent no--name “urban” themed stuff, food court included. No reason to go there anymore. Eastdale Mall is on track to join Montgomery Mall in the shopping graveyard. The last real name brand to open there was Chuck E Cheese, and that was ten years ago.
After over 2 decades, the city finally repurposed the old Montgomery Mall property with the huge fire station and a high school.

The incident last year with a lady driving by Eastdale Mall who was hit by a stray bullet and paralyzed for life put an enormous black eye on that mall.

Eastchase is the only viable option in Montgomery, the hotels, restaurants and big box retailers in the numerous strips in Eastchase push the shoppers to the area.

Scheel's Sporting Goods is a major sports & outdoors retailer in the upper Midwest, think Academy in the South. They're entire business model is built on being an anchor store at a mall. I can't think of a single Scheel's I have been to that was stand alone. Heck, in Sioux Falls, SD, one of their major stores, it isn't even attached to the main mall in the region (Sioux Empire Mall), instead it is attached to the Western Mall.

The store drives a large amount of foot traffic. I probably go to Scheel's at least a half dozen times or more a year, which is a lot of retail store visits for me, but I have not stepped past the doors of Scheel's and into the actual mall in years.

Indoor malls will probably always have a place in Midwestern cities just because of winter weather.

The Woodlands Mall and the Galleria are just as good as they’ve ever been

I was just talking about ice skating at the Galleria as a kid the other day with a guy from Houston. He said the Galleria was sketchy at best these days. Lots of crime in the nearby parking lots preying on out of towners.

You can forget about release date when it comes to Stranger Things influence on kids today. My daughter is almost eleven and is dying to watch Stranger Things. I won't let her until she is older. She is patiently waiting until she turns 12.

Regarding Stranger Things, I would be interested to find out if the mall used in Stranger Things is the same mall/set used for Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The two-level, circular design looks identical. I realize that mall design was very popular, so maybe just a coincidence.

Indoor malls in actual good locations never went away.

Check out Green Hills Mall and surrounding area in Nashville. It is absolutely packed every weekend and decently crowded on weekdays.

Went to Galleria in late December of 2023. There was a lot of movement and traffic probably b/c of the time of the year. Was somewhat unimpressed due to the fact that I was there prior in 2005 and noticed the difference in building maintenance, or lack of.

And Sony just announced they will no longer produce BluRays. You're over-romanticizing things you see in your FB feed.

Katy Mills is full of the same trash that it has always had, it's just that some stuff has been replaced with Arcades, massage chairs, bouncy houses, etc. It's a stop for MegaBus, if that's any clue.

Short answer yes. All the younger kids who grew up during covid, are yearning to go out in public now.

The malls were nice to visit until some of the uncultured decided to visit them and have gang fights inside.

Love the intro of the Fast times movie such nostalgia and memories of a mall in its prime.
