the actual Cpap purchase was way less in cost than the sleep test. have your doc write a prescription and go to Cpap.com. do not involve your insurance company in this purchase

They are ok for diagnosing mild cases of sleep apnea. It will diagnose you but no titration. The DME company will set you up on an auto titrations cpap that will detect events and set the pressure to correct it.
If you have any other significant health problems you should have an in lab study.
On the positive side home sleep tests are much cheaper for the patient.

The machines they use don’t have the capabilities they do in the office therefore they are less accurate. One of my coworkers used to work at a sleep study lab and this is what he told me

I'm ignorant on the matter but do THAT many people really need CPAP machines? It seems like everyone has them now.

My doc just told me to get one done.

I’ve had 4 nights in a lab and have been diagnosed with moderate apnea but can’t sleep with a cpap. The reason it took four nights is because I couldn’t sleep. The last night the doc gave me ambien so I crashed around 12:30 and woke up around 5 but the tech “forgot” to put the CPAP titration settings where they needed to be so they asked for another night. I told them to frick themselves.
I’m 6’1” and 215 so I could probably loose a little but I’m not a yooge bitch.

I did a home test for 2 nights, both nights I tore off the leads, they told me my score was 60, I have an auto-pap, never looked back.

Happens everyday. But the main reason you think this is that doctors can pick out apnea pts in a clinic setting pretty easily. Epworth sleepiness scale along with weight and neck size are clear indications that the pt likely has apnea.
They don’t just randomly select pts for sleep studies. You must meet certain criteria before your insurance will approve one.

Yes they are fine. If you have strong suspicion for someone with sleep apnea, they do a good job of diagnosis. You still have to have a titration study, as someone else mentioned.
If you have a strong suspicion, but the home sleep study is negative, I would follow it up with a form in-lab sleep study to confirm. But for most cases, they are just fine.

This.
Insurance companies want to rent the machine from a supplier for a year instead of just an outright purchase.
A year's worth of co-pays for the rental fee is higher than the purchase cost from cpap.com
Do your homework before getting a machine.

I'm 6 ft 185 but snore like a beast and my wife says I make wet sounds...
I'm tired but I also have a baby so who knows.
I mentioned it to the doc at my physical and she was ordering a sleep test at home.
What should I be prepared for?
