My wife isnt awkward. But she complains a lot about sales reps and the such, they waste her time and she doesnt want to talk to them.

I'd say probably 10-15% of my class is made up of people who are truly uncomfortable to be around. People who I could never see interacting with patients/co workers successfully.
Another 30-40% are fairly normal people that aren't the most socially adept. Think that just comes with the territory of lots of smart people.
The rest are normal everyday people. I like to think I fall into this category

dont think its necessarily the doctor thing. I think its more of the highly intelligent people were usually the nerds that while smart as all hell were usually social awkward and it just carried on in live.

One of the coolest guys I know is a Pathologist.
His first wife was killed by a drunk driver and his second died of cancer. One of the best guys you could ever know.
My best friend growing up and neighbor is a doc and he was as social as could be. Never had a second thought about taking him anywhere with me.
He needed a stick to beat the pussy away with before he got married.

doctors are the brainiac geeks in school. you don't generally get to be a doctor if you're a good old boy socially outgoing guy. certainly there are exceptions, but the more time you spend in higher education, the less socially skillful you are.

I deal with doctors often in my work life and in my personal life, there are weird ones and normal ones just like every other profession.

A lot of them are like engineers, more at ease talking shop with peers than engaging in normal conversation with mortals. But there are great exceptions of course.

you are all over thinking it. most MD's spend their entire day talking with their patients, but also objectively diagnosing and treating at the same time. so by the end of the day, we're just all talked out and will need a while to shift our thought process from critical thinking to just talk.
