What were you depressed about?

I had no idea so many people used antidepressents until I went on a bachelorette trip about 5 years ago and I was the only one out of 10 that wasn't on anti-depressants. Half of these women I would give anything to look like or have the things they have. It blew my mind.

I'm chemically depressed, not reason for me to be sad about anything, my life is pretty much great right now... still depressed.

Happiness = reality-expectations

Translation: if you accept things for what they are and people for who they are, instead of being bummed when they are not what you expected: you will be a happier individual.

You're welcome.

People need to get over being sad and get in with their lives.
Everyone I ever knew that was diagnosed, was because a girl left them, or they couldn't get a job or something else.

welp, this confirms it.

No. And it's no surprise that you're a cop based on your black/white view of one's brain.

Swing and a miss dude. I qualified my OP as being only a theory obtained from personal observation. I try to be careful not to make definitive statements. I also believe the mind to be anything but black and white. It is far more gray!

I always thought depression was BS.

Then I went through it for 2 to 3 months and had trouble functioning.

That sucked.

No. Depression is a mental illness dumbass. It can be treated and managed with medication.

One of my favorite quotes on the matter:

quote:

Even when you're being treated, you're not always going to be at 100 percent. I have days where I wake up and feel like I'm going to rip life a new Saturday, but on other days I lie in bed for hours because the only thing I think would be worth getting up for is throwing myself in front of a bus made out of swords. Then there are the days where I do nothing but eat Oreos and masturbate. That has nothing to do with the depression; I just really like eating Oreos and masturbating. I call it cookies and cream. I'm not apologizing for that joke.

Expectations don't have much to do with depression

Unhappiness, or suffering according to Buddha, are the results of desire. Depression is a medical condition. It may be like ADD/ADHD in that it is often misdiagnosed, but depression and expectations are not usually related. Saying "get over" being depressed, is akin to saying "just stop" being poor!

There is also a more complicated form of chronic depression known as dysthymia (neurotic depression). Complicated in that it doesn't have symptoms as severe as major depression but is mild depression that last for several years and is very difficult to get out of. I've had this form for a long time now. I had anxiety issues growing up that built and built until I almost had a full blown nervous break down. Almost as a defense mechanism I withdrew socially from friends and family and lost a lot of the pleasure in life. To this day I have a very hard time getting motivated to do basic everyday stuff and although I have plenty of friends I tend to isolate myself. There are worse things to have but chronic long term depression is a serious thing and can really effect you quality of life. I just attributed it all to my personality and never realized it was treatable. I regret not knowing and getting counseling/medication because it has robbed me of a lot of good years.

As for having unrealistic expectations, I don't think that's the main issue with depression. The bigger issue with clinically depressed people is they usually have anxiety disorders or other mental illnesses going on at the same time. Battling both can be physically and mentally exhausting and stress inducing which makes the conditions worse. If anything, depressed people shut out the world and lose all ambition. Expectations (met or unmet) are irrelevant to clinically depressed people.
