Just don’t buy new right now. Find a good dependable used vehicle with good service records for a 1/3 of the investment.

I finally got to the point where common sense should prevail. Proud owner of a 2004 GX470 and 2015 GS350 paid in full = best move ever.

Once again, most states have laws on the books prohibiting manufacturer to consumer sales. The manufacturers also tried setting up a few service facilities to perform warranty repairs, they didn't last long. The dealerships are here to stay for the near future.

Can laws not be changed? Why is it I have to buy an auto from a dealer but I can buy a PC directly from Dell computers? Why is something with wheels different?

Yeah I was never in the market, I want something new just because my vehicle has been paid off for awhile and I have a decent down payment. However, when I was looking a lot of places had MSRP + 1000-5000k added to it as well. Which I have no desire to pay.
Now that the used car market has tanked I'll probably just hold onto my vehicle for another 3-4 years before I start really looking again. I have some notifications set to let me know about inventory and pricing for local dealerships and through Houston.

I’ve had a personal rule since 2018 to not buy a vehicle unless I can afford to pay cash for it. I’m hoping the rate increases open up some purchase opportunities for me.

Fully agree and cannot believe all the downvotes you received. Must be alot of fat and poor reading this thread.

My friend's wife used to work at a credit union, and she showed us how much the dealerships actually paid for vehicles and then how much they sold them for. It was nauseating to see how much hundreds of percent profit they made. She said she saw this daily, and it was always like this.
Yeah, GM, Ford, RAM, Toyota, etc. routinely share their books with Credit Unions.

You are a moron for at least two things:

a) believing this
b) posting it here

And that you have potentially the same weight of vote as someone who has actual brainwaves is the nauseating thing here.

In March I bought my kid a 2022 loaded civic. Bought at Ascension Honda, they were the only dealer within 150 miles that had the car. We paid about 3k over but they gave us all the $ on the trade. Recently the car got totaled and I went back to them again. Insurance gave us about $4k over plus TTL. They offered either $4k in “accessories” or straight $2k over sticker. I bought on that because everyone wanted a bit more over sticker. We had a handshake at that price no extras. Well I get the invoice and it has $500 for vin etching. They let me walk over that. Since I was paying cash and didn’t have a trade they said that’s where they were stuck and let me walk.

You totally messed up. Never tell them you have cash, especially when you really do. Let them finance it, get the incentive for using their financing, and then pay if off first payment. Not only did you not get a car by walking, you probably lost $1500-$2500 financing incentive.

Get a Tesla and not deal with a dealer at all. Best buying experience I've ever had.

Depends on the make, model, and demand. Do a little research.

Of course laws can be changed. The dealers have very strong lobbyist in most states that will be fighting that change though. The manufacturers would be on the publics side trying to change them but they've tried unsuccesfully to do this for many years. Does Dell have service departments locally to fix your computer when it breaks? That's where dealerships really hold the edge is in the availability of access to repair information. Independent service centers can't get info needed to do repairs on late model vehicles or in some cases the programming needed from the manufacturer to install new parts.

We bought a few months ago from Greg Leblanc in Houma and didn't have any markups. Barker Honda didn't either

there are no “financing incentives” on a 2023 Honda. Best you can get is a rate for 3.9%. We decided on the price over sticker before I told them how I was paying. They brought the invoice for me to sign, asked me how I was paying and it had the $500 on there. I MAY have been able to talk them down lower than that but probably not. Almost all new civics still sell before they come in. I checked several dealers to see if they had anything coming unclaimed.

Yes major computer manufactures will dispatch a repair tech to the location of the device for repair.

I agree with your lobbyist comments and the need for repairs. All of which could have solutions. An independent shop could get certified techs to perform warranty repairs.

Change will happen. The market will push for it.

I never understood how a car became a status symbol for middle class families.

I have a 2013 Ford Fusion, 70k miles. You guys can laugh all you want, but if if lasts me another 10+ years I'm driving it till the end. I've seen people and families buy new cars "every so many years". Nope.

Bought a Gladiator in 2020. Had an oil change last month and dealership offered me 5k above what I paid for my 2 year old truck with 30k miles.

Crazy times
