The inverse of this is the issue with a lot of your fellow cyclists though. They think because in some states they legally have the same 'rights' as cars that they should be treated the exact same way... when you just aren't. They are very different.
Even motorcyclists for the most part understand that they have to behave differently while on their bike than they do in a car. I think a lot of road cyclists are so entitled that they refuse to adapt to different conditions.
I also think some people just genuinely don't care how their behavior impacts those around them. Maybe the prevalence of that is just higher in the cyclist community.

If you want to be an a-hole like that, it can go both ways.
You say normal folk. If you’d like to classify people who regularly cycle and those who don’t, I don’t think you want to toss around adjectives. Wise of you to say normal when there’s about ten less flattering adjectives I’d call the average person in the south I see in a vehicle on any given day.

and these dipshits still figure out ways to block traffic and pester the normal folk.

Sounds like a boring life…. But then again, you think riding a bike to Walmart sounds more enjoyable than driving to Walmart like a normal person. So… I guess it makes sense.

Door Dingers? I actually don't mind. I used to do that sh*t all the time when I was young. Can't get mad at kids for doing that when I did it.

If you exercised you’d relate. But you don’t. So you hate.
You want to ride on highways with vehicles that are several ton or more going 45+ mph on a bike?
Then blame the driver when you swerve in front of them.
Then you erect a bike in their honor that if struck by a car during a wreck becomes a deadly projectile.
Then the city or state get's sued and tax payers pick up the bill for the injury caused by the deadly projectile.
On another note - You want to get rid of cyclist, spend tax dollars for bike lanes and you will never see cyclist using them.

I wish all of the OT could experience the joy that is riding a bike out into some beautiful remote farmland and then coming back and crushing a pizza cause you just incinerated 4000 calories. Man cycling is the best.

Yes, there are dildos who ride bikes. I also have to avoid them along with lallygagging walkers, invisible and unusually aggressive joggers and people who let their dogs wander about on 15ft long leashes.
You have to avoid dildo cyclists, lallygagging walkers, invisible aggressive joggers, and dogs wandering on 15ft leashes. Try doing that, plus avoiding riders like yourself, in a 4000 pound vehicle doing the speed limit.
quote:
But really the worst feeling I get is when somebody unnecessarily buzzes me in a vehicle at twice the speed limit because I theoretically held them up for 3 seconds.
Or maybe you held them up longer than you think?
quote:
Or when somebody, who I can see is looking down at the phone in their hand, pulls out in front of me on a supposedly safe neighborhood street.
Nothing special about that. It's how fender benders have been happening since automobiles were invented. Considering that vehicles outweigh you and your bicycle by such a large margin, and you are never not paying attention, then you should never allow this to happen. Which is exactly how I rode my motorcycle. Might doesn't make right is utter bullshite when you are talking about the roadways and trusting someone else not to kill you. Sure, they may be in the wrong, but that doesn't make you any less dead.
quote:
I could go on, and I've actually been hit by cars twice in that 20 years (fortunately nothing too serious), but I'm so used to the unexpected that I anticipate and accept that this kind of stupidity exists.
Sure, it is stupidity, and inconsiderate to boot. But in reality it is just normal everyday traffic. The difference is it is YOUR life on the line.

Of course. You do realize that your statement is an acknowledgement that some, maybe a majority, of your fellow cyclists are in fact not doing their best to not be a nuisance.
quote:
And maybe it doesn't matter, but you would be surprised by how many cyclists are conservatives and patriots who have served in the military and LEO. A lot of lawyers, doctors, engineers, CEO's, etc are out there.
You're right. It doesn't matter.
quote:
These are people are needed and serve a much greater purpose to our current society who are just trying to be better. It ain't just about "exercise."
And then you close with the most arrogant statement I've seen here, outside of AggieHank. Being better doesn't include making a nuisance of yourself to dozens to hundreds of drivers who are trying to live their "lesser purpose" lives.
Seriously, get a life dude.

It is not unusual on our cooldown that my wife says it makes her feel like a kid again. Don't forget the beer with the pizza!
If they had the legs and lungs for it I think the majority of tOT denizens would love the shite out of RAGBRAI. It is a week long tailgate with 30k people that just happens to be punctuated with 450 miles of riding across Iowa.

My favorites are the overly safety cautious nerds with the seizure inducing strobe lights on the front and back of their bikes when the sun hasn't even set yet. Friggin' lighthouses on wheels...

In no way shape or form do I think going to Walmart via any means is enjoyable.
But not surprising that’s the store you mention.

The amount of OTers who need a bike ride to take the edge off is too damn high

How far and long would one have to ride to burn 4000 calories? When I run 13.1 I'm only burning about 1800.

4000 calories takes me about 80-100 miles depending on how much climbing there is and how hard I push it.

Bluetooth speaker on the handle bars with V10 F1 sound tracks and Top Fuel cars for when I’m passing.

By myself on gently rolling terrain averaging ~25mph it takes me about 2.5 hours or just over 62 miles to burn 4,000 calories. I might have the legs to do that once a month these days but on average it would probably take me a full 3 hours.

And yet many road bike riders will jam up a lane of traffic at rush hour, riding on the street right next to the safe, quiet trails
The ironic part is they'll tell you they choose the road because there's too many annoying pedestrians slowing them down on the paths

I drive out to more remote areas to do my rides. I try to encounter as little motorists as possible.
