Good God did I.

But it was still idiotic.

Health insurance will probably be the kicker for most wanting to retire young.

Seriously? I honestly think i could retire, and make it to 80 or 90 yrs old, on like $500k... that would obviously involve moving to somewhere like Malaysia or Costa Rica, but I’ve thought about it in order to get there sooner.. i live a pretty simple lifestyle for the most part though.

ETA my calculation assumes that SS will still be solvent in 20 or 30 years, which i realize we could do a whole thread on but let’s not.

Interesting question...

I'd like to retire from my "earnings" career at 55.

After that, I'd begin doing something that was purely of my interest, perhaps becoming a professor somewhere while day trading, or do something as far out as maintain a fishing lodge in Wyoming. Whatever it is, I'd like to still be active and learning. We are living much longer, so it's no mystery careers are getting longer too. I just hope I hit those financial marks for myself/family to pursue those things later in life.

The idea of moving to some retirement community in Florida, Arizona, or anywhere alike to play golf, drink beer, get fat and lazy, and only be excited when grandchildren come around/college football comes on would make me yearn for the sweet release of death.

I think this is the crux of the issue.. i think that most of us would be happy to keep working forever if we *wanted* to work, versus if we *had* to work.

Yeah I could live off of the interest of a lot less than 10 million for the rest of my life starting now at 41

I can retire at 55 for sure. I definitely don’t plan on going past 60.

retire while you have good health, manage your money and retirement money well.

Best advice- try to live off your retirement income for 2-3 years before you retire.

I have way too many colleagues who have retired and went back to work

My wife "retired" at 49 and I just did at 50. I put retired in quotes, because be are both working about 10 hours a week. We were both lucky to be able to find consulting work, both our kids have full college scholarships, and we have no debt. The negative is health insurance. With my wife's job, we were all 100% fully covered - the company even covered our deductibles and co-pays. It is only now that we realize how expensive health insurance is.

make sure of that before you pull the plug baw, you have to have something to retire to, as opposed to retire from, I love my job and what I do and in over 40 years of doing this I have never thought of it as a job, or necessarily "going to work," I've made more money(as a result of decent investments and having the time to seek them out,) than my grandkids(if I had them,) could spend, as mandatory retirement age approaches I'm getting a little melancholy and can see the light, but I've got it so good doing what I do that I'm not sure that I'm ready for it, or even want it

You waited to you retired to think about how much your health insurance would cost?

Are you having to sacrifice some things that you might regret even if you meet your goal in your mid fifties?

There is more to life than accumulating wealth , but those things ara all individual choices. You are the only one who can make that determination for yourself.

non-employer subsidized health coverage will be about $2000-3000/month.

And this is what it’s all about. Trump needs to do his job and replace Sotero care so we can get competitive quotes from multiple companies. Who wants to or can afford to pay $25k/yr for health insurance.

I’m going for 55. I’m still in my 30s, but I can keep my insurance and get my pension at that age.
