Applying for multiple jobs with the same company

I’ve always stuck with the “find the job that most aligns with your desire and abilities and apply for only it.”

I’ve been applying to several jobs recently, mostly with larger companies who have numerous similar postings for the same location. About half of the companies suggest setting up a talent profile as well as apply. They then invite you to search their other openings as well as the one you’ve applied for and apply for those that interest you.

So what say you? Should you apply for multiple positions with the same company or stick to what you believe is the best fit at the time of the application?

Agree with this, but my fear is additional shots reducing the potential for success of the first, or second, or third shot. Maybe it’s exponential or maybe it increases potential for overall success in having one shot of many, made.

If it's a larger company then all of your applications will be going into the same applicant tracking system. You'll possibly look a little more desperate to someone in HR, or you could possibly have your resume reviewed by a lazy HR person who isn't going to think any further then what's in the folder for that job. Probably doesn't make much difference either way. Look up the head of the department, find their e-mail, and send your resume directly. Let them filter it back down to the correct person. Just my $.02.

The job I've had for the past 10 years wasn't the one I originally applied for with my company. I was applying for a lower position and they asked if I also wanted to apply for another opening they had since I met the qualifications. I got the higher job so I say apply for any one you like.

If you apply for multiple positions that are similar in responsibilities or even the same position that is available at different company locations, I don't see the problem. To me it just shows you are being aggressive about finding an opportunity to get your foot in the door with said company.

Use it as a launch pad to show how interested you are in that particular company. If they ask why, just throw compliments their way on how great of a place it is.

Agreed. If reviewed by the same person it ideally says “I’m interested in finding the right fit at your company and am flexible based on your knowledge of the jobs” and alternatively gets your resume into different hands which may view it differently

I guess it depends on if your applying to multiple jobs that are covered by the same recruiter. Otherwise, my experience is they don’t give a shite if you’re applying to multiple jobs. I usually get asked if I’ve been talking with any recruiters within that company and I answer honestly.

There are 3 or 4 companies I’ve applied for more than 10 positions for that in quakified for and and I’ve gotten interview requests on like application 8.

One time I had two different recruiters from the same company reach out to me on the same day for two different positions which was super awkward. One recruiter definitely was hinting she expected me to tell the other recruiter to take a hike and I’m reasonably sure she contacted her after and told her to leave me be.

Maybe you shouldn’t listen to me though. I’m unemployed. :(

Wife applied for multiple jobs at one major employer before landing an interview and ultimately being hired.

All of the positions were relatively in the same field so it wasn't like she was shotgunning applications to every job posting.

I just did that. Didn't get the position I wanted, but am being considered for the supervisor position in the department I don't really want.

Thank you all for your insight. Many of you touched on positions of similar skills, responsibilities, etc and that is my case. Again, thank you all and I have some applying to do now.

I applied to a job online, the recruiter called and told me to also apply for a similar job, I did, and I ended up taking it.

I wonder if it would have played out differently had I applied to both upfront.

Thanks. It’s only been about a month and a half.

But nows my chance to rant:

It’s been interesting. I know i have great experience but a lot of places automatically dismiss me as I don’t have a traditional business/stem background. I am by no means set on any industry But I’ve gotten stonewalled from everything not in finance completely. If I am unemployed for the next 8 months, I can get another contract with my previous company most likely but that’s far from ideal for many obvious reasons.

I can be adult about most of that but the job search has proven frustrating in so many unique ways.

I applied to a hedge fund recently. Things were going fine. But then they realized I did t currently live in New York. I said I was willing to move on my dime but they said said they were looking more for locals.

I was talking with an investment bank. Great position that fits my background. Got a message for a call back. Have tried calling 3 or 4 times and haven’t gotten a response.

Talking with another investment bank. Interviewed with 9 people. Interviews were ok but they seemed interested. I follow up with HR to ask if I’m moving on and they refuse to tell me I’m no longer being considered. Once every two weeks I request feedback and I’m told I’m still under consideration. This has been for almost 2 months

And I’ve applied for a ton of basic entry level “safety” positions that I haven’t heard back from and that’s beyond frustrating.

That’s a tough spot. May only be a month and a half, but that’s significant to me so I hope you start getting some serious call backs.

Sounds like you had a contract position with one of the major banks. I have a good friend who went through and still does this exact thing, assuming I’m right. It was very hard on him. He ran into the same wall and seems to at the end of each contact. After the first contract ended he ended up taking a job 2 states and 6 hours away for 9 months or so before he could re-up for the same contract position. I think he’s on his 3rd contract now, but he puts back half his salary to live off of during the lull period now and while he looks for another job. It’s tough. Frankly, I think he still struggles quietly with it even now that he’s sort of worked out a system for himself.

Fortunately, I’m currently employed but I have run into these similar hurdles as well. I’m in finance in healthcare and I run into this problem on both logical ends. Seems like it’s “too financial/analytical for an operational role in healthcare” and “too healthcare for a financial role at a major bank or manufacturer.” I feel sort of stuck in a career middle at the moment. I’m currently an analyst and want the next step, beit with my current employer or starting new and hoping to move up.
