Apple Inc. plans to build a self-driving car for consumers and is targeting 2024 to produce the vehicle, Reuters reported on Monday. The company is developing its own battery technology that could reduce the cost of power packs and extend the vehicle’s range, Reuters said, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Apple is tapping outside partners for elements of the system, including lidar sensors that provide autonomous cars with a real-time, 3-D view of the world, Reuters added. Apple is also developing its own lidar technology. There’s still a chance Apple will decide to reduce the scope of its efforts to an autonomous driving system that would be integrated with a car made by a traditional automaker, Reuters reported, noting that it’s unclear which manufacturer would build it for Apple. Apple has been working on driverless car technology since 2014, but pared back its ambitions from a full-fledged vehicle in 2017, Bloomberg News has reported. Since then, Apple has been working on the underlying autonomous system. The company has been deciding whether to attach this system to its own car, or existing vehicles, or to partner with an established carmaker, Bloomberg News reported earlier this month.

Every six months, will they upgrade the headlights or something and then put it out as the next version?
I bet it has a camera in it.

With the Apple Upgrade Program, you’ll be able to get a new iCar every year.

But it will be best to wait a few months so they can work out all the bugs.

They will have to compete with these 3 that I see driving around San Francisco every day.
Google's Waymo
Amazon's ZooX
GMs Cruise
Not to mention Tesla.

If it’s self-drive app crashes as often as my iPhone apps, how do I hard reset? No way in hell I’d drive that

Wasn’t this known years ago when they stole Tesla engineers away?

It will not come with a home charger and every connector is going to be proprietary. You'll be able to buy an exorbitantly priced charger with the proprietary connector or you can find an iCharge station and pay three times the going rate for electricity.

It’s interesting to see GM in that space. They’ve spent a ton of money developing new EV technology. The Escalade will be the only non-electric Cadillac. Plus you see the GMC Hummer and the Cruise as you mentioned. It’ll be interesting to see if they can compete in that space.
Ford and FCA are far beyond GM in EVs from my research.

You mean every six months they will update they will change the charging portal hole and you'll be forced to upgrade somehow and buy new charging devices.

What is the deal with these stupid electric and self-driving cars???
Americans have thoroughly rejected them. Why are they wasting time and money developing this shite no one wants????
Why can’t they develop something useful, like something that will make my wife shut up or make her think I’m listening to her when I’m thinking about something else?

It’ll have a proprietary charging cord that can be financed over 10 years
